SWING FOR STUDENTS

HALLOWELL, Maine - The RSU2 Futures Committee is taking a “swing for children” at their first annual golf tournament being held on Saturday, June 28, 2014, 10:00am, at The Meadows Golf Club in Litchfield.  RSU2 is currently seeking individuals and teams to make up foursomes for this exciting event.  Cost is $60 per person or $240 per foursome.  Cost includes green fees, cart rental, lunch, and prizes including the chance to win a Chevy Cruze from O’Connor Wheels of Augusta through a hole-in-one opportunity on the course.  In addition to the Chevy Cruze and other outstanding prizes provided by O’Connor Wheels, players may buy into additional challenges (longest drive, longest drive with a putter, closest to the pin) to win other prizes from our community partners.

"We are reaching out to the community members, local businesses and parents to solicit participation by donating to our raffle, becoming a sponsor or simply joining in the fun for the future of our students," says committee chair Jeff Gosselin.

RSU2’s Futures Committee is unique among Maine public schools. While most schools fundraise for specific activities, such as enrichment programs or field trips, RSU2’s Futures Committee’s primary goal is to eliminate budget shortfalls for general operations and maintain programs that attract families to the district (such as athletics, fine arts, and foreign language programs).

“The Futures Committee prides itself in being a proactive community development group to not only cover financial shortfalls but to ensure the highest quality education for the next generation and enhance community involvement.  We feel fundraising for the district is the future for public schools,” says Superintendent Virgel Hammonds.  “With an annual goal of $100,000 the Futures Committee will work to keep the programs that make RSU2 a leader while avoiding significant increases in taxes.”

The golf tournament is the third of many events happening throughout the year, following a successful Fishing Derby back in February and Dodge Ball Tournament in March.  Future events and opportunities include a mud run, family carnivals, bike rides and many more events are in the planning stages.  In addition to raising money for the 10 schools within the district, these events are designed to bring the RSU2 communities of Hallowell, Farmingdale, Monmouth, Richmond and Dresden together for family fun.
