May Programs for Job Seekers at the York County CareerCenter

SPRINGVALE, Maine - The York County CareerCenter in Springvale continues its workshop programs for job seekers and those considering training to upgrade their skills and increase their employability.

"Our unemployment rate is falling and our businesses are hiring," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "If you are searching for work but haven't been getting interviews, I encourage you to contact a CareerCenter for free help in improving that resume and practicing job interviews. CareerCenters will help you be in the best position to take advantage of our economic growth."

CareerCenters can assist businesses by offering workshops on location, at local businesses or other organizations at no cost. The following workshops and programs will be held at the CareerCenter in Springvale unless otherwise noted.

Resume Workshop - Tuesday, May 6, 9 a.m. to Noon. Explore the basics of resume writing and learn how to promote the qualifications you have that directly match what the employer needs. Registration is required.

York County "NetWorks" - Join us as we continue our updated workshop format and take your job search to the next level by utilizing the power of networking. We will start off our morning with brief introductions over coffee then begin this interactive workshop.

- Temping Your Way to Your Next Job - Tuesday, May 13, 8:30 a.m. to noon. Why should you consider registering with a staffing agency? Please join us for a lively discussion and Q-and-A session with those who have the answers and learn about the benefits of temporary employment. Space will be limited; please call to
reserve a seat.

- Human Resource Panel - Tuesday, May 27, 8:30 a.m. to noon. Three Human Resources Directors from local businesses will provide an overview of their companies; discuss the "ins-and-outs" of resume and job application reviews, their job interview process and appropriate follow-up techniques. Essentials of College Planning Workshop - Monday, May 12, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Randi Paine from the Maine Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC) will be offering a free workshop for adults 19 and older covering topics on College Awareness and Planning along with the Federal Financial Aid process. The instructor will assist participants in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Space is limited. Mature Worker Event: Changes, Challenges and Opportunities in Today's Economy! -Friday, May 16, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event will be held at University College at Saco, 110 Main St., Suite 1101, Saco. This workshop is for women and men who are 50+. Mature workers have a number of distinct challenges in today's economy affecting employment and retirement choices. This event will identify emerging trends that impact how mature workers view the world of work and what they need to assess for change beyond work. Come explore what community agencies, educational services and professionals are available to help you with building ideas and strategies to consider as you look ahead. This workshop is a collaboration between York County CareerCenter, University College at Saco, Goodwill Workforce Solutions and Kerry Kenney, Consultant.

GATEways to Employment - Monday, May 19th, 9 a.m. to noon. Join us for the beginning installment of our "workshop trilogy." Learn how assessments can identify abilities, interests and skills and discover the unadvertised job market. Other topics include Job Search Strategies, Resumes, Cover Letter Tips and Interviewing. - Springborn Staffing - Monday May 19, 8:30 to 11 a.m. A representative from Springborn Staffing will be recruiting at the York County CareerCenter. Openings are available for experienced production, assembly and warehouse personnel. Applicants must have reliable transportation. Please bring two valid forms of ID and resume to interview. Health insurance benefits are available.

- Leddy Group - Tuesday, May 13 and May 27, 8:30 to 11 a.m. A representative from Leddy Group will be recruiting at the York County CareerCenter. No Appointment needed.

- Adecco Staffing - Every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An Adecco representative will be recruiting at the York County CareerCenter in Springvale. Current openings are in Sanford, Biddeford, Saco and Portland areas. No appointment required.

The York County CareerCenter will also feature several sessions led by these partner organizations in May:

Women Unlimited - Non-Traditional Occupations Specialist consultations for those interested in exploring non-traditional occupations (NTO) for women and who are considering a potentially better-paying job. Contact Sue LeClair, NTO specialist at 215-6992.

Goodwill Workforce Solutions administers federally funded employment and training programs through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Certain eligibility requirements apply. If you think you might qualify or could benefit from this program, please call the Workforce Solutions Center in Biddeford at 571-3301 to schedule a date for a training orientation.

Maine Centers for Women, Work & Community offer no cost classes in Assertive Communication, Creating Your Future, Creating the Rest of Your Life, Credit Yourself, Entrepreneurial Training, Financing Your Future, Professional Development and Mature Worker Activities. CareerCenters, part of the Maine Department of Labor, offer a variety of services to help people find employment or upgrade skills. Each center provides several public-access computer workstations with Microsoft Office software, resume writing and cover letter software, Internet access and O'Net software for skills assessment. All CareerCenter services are free of charge.
