TRENTON, N.J. -  The Portland Sea Dogs (38-18) completed the day/night doubleheader sweep with a 4-3 win over the Trenton Thunder (30-27) on Saturday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Portland has won the first 3 games of the series and closed out their best May in franchise history at 23-10.  Earlier in the day, the 'Dogs won 9-4 behind Keith Couch's sixth career complete game and 4 RBI from Mookie Betts

Trailing 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, Bo Greenwell began the rally with a one-out walk.  Mookie Betts (3-for-4) picked up his sixth hit of the doubleheader, a double down the left-field line to advance Greenwell to third base.  With the infield drawn in, Deven Marrero delivered a two-run single to centerfield for the game-winning hit.

Couch allows two earned over seven innings, becomes league's first 7-game winner
TRENTON, N.J. - The Portland Sea Dogs (37-18) trailed after the first, but took advantage of three errors and scored five in the fourth en route to the 9-4 win over the Trenton Thunder (30-26) in game one of a split doubleheader, Saturday afternoon at Arm & Hammer Park. The win marks a franchise-high 22nd for the 'Dogs in the month of May.

Portland picked up a run in the first courtesy of a Matt Spring single that plated Mookie Betts and gave the visitors the early lead. Trenton came out and notched two against Keith Couch in the bottom half on two hits and an error, which put them in front 2-1.

Perennial Gardening Series to Begin June 3

CAMDEN/ROCKPORT, Maine - Wendy Andresen will present the first installment of her regular lecture series “Tending the Perennial Garden” at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, June 3 at 12:00 noon.

A Merryspring summer tradition, Wendy’s series is designed to demonstrate techniques and tips to help your perennial garden thrive throughout the year. June is a crucial month for perennials, as they need to be pruned and managed correctly to ensure growth and blooming all summer. This interactive tour of the perennial beds will cover the basics of perennial gardening, including pinching, pruning, grooming, and supporting plants. Tracy DiSabato-Aust’s book The Well Tended Perennial Garden will serve as a reference for this series, and copies of that book and other gardening items will be for sale after the presentation.

Participants for this talk should meet outside at Merryspring’s gazebo at noon. Guests are reminded to wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing to this event. This talk is part of a continuing series, with a new installment occurring once every three weeks between June and October.

Ricardo Cony Ethcart Opens June 6

ROCKLAND, Maine - On First Friday, June 6, Carver Hill Gallery, 338 Main Street in Rockland, will be showing Argentinian artist Ricardo Cony Etchart. Carver Hill is the first gallery to bring Ricardo's work to the states.

Ricardo Cony Etchart was born to be an artist, but a law degree, accounting, and various other intellectual and philosophical pursuits shanghaied his early efforts. A few years ago, when the kids were less dependent on him and his career was at cruising altitude, he set up shop on the 7th floor of his Buenos Aires apartment and began to put some serious paint down. With a famous Argentinean artist guiding him, he started painting Vermeer style portraits in oil. Ricardo is a perfectionist, and these took him several months each to complete. His early success and natural ability might have led many of us down the road of portraiture, or, at least, realism; however, his incredibly strong sense of color, design, and composition combined with his fascination for people and the human condition led him down an entirely different path.  As a native Argentinean, he was deeply influenced

Michael Lund Presents “Frank Sinatra & Tony Bennett” June 12

Michael Lund will present an audio lecture, “Frank Sinatra & Tony Bennett: Great Singers of the American Songbook,” at 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. Lund adds commentary to the great recordings from Columbia and Capitol Records by these two great balladeers of the American songbook and America’s Tin Pan Alley. Songwriters featured will include George Shearing, Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein, Fred Astaire, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Sammy Cahn, and Robert Farnon. Some of the arrangers include Nelson Riddle, Ralph Sharon, George Siravo, Marty Manning, Marion Evans, and Peter Matz.

Michael Paul Lund has sung and recorded the American Songbook with members of the original Tonight Show Band in New York City. He has also written pop songs including one for Shirley Bassey. He also wrote lyrics with composers Bee Walker and Richard Lane (Bee Walker also wrote “Hey Jealous Lover” for Frank Sinatra).

Lund has delivered illustrated music talks all over the united States, including libraries, schools, historical societies, senior colleges, and theaters-in-the-round. He has done radio commentary on commercial stations coast to coast, including two-hour specials on WGBH-FM in Boston. He regularly writes music criticism for major record companies in the form of liner notes that accompany classical CD re-issues by legendary performers. Recordings of Sinatra, Bennett, and others will be available to purchase at this event.

3rd Grade History Night

3rd Grade History Night June 9 Camden Public Library

The Camden Public Library will host Mr. Seidell and the Third Grade Team on Monday evening, June 9, 5:00-6:00 pm. As part of a year-long project with Heather Moran, the library’s History Center director, the third grade has created a local history website, which will be available to view on iPads and other computers. There will also be “Tunnel Books” on display about each of the historical sites visited. Heather Moran led the kids on tours of local historical sites such as the Seabright Dam, gunpowder mill site, the waterfront, Opera House, Knox Mill, and the Conway Boulder. A Tunnel Book is a 3D work of art created by the students.

During the event at the library there will be an informational booth about Youth Arts (one of the sponsors), a tour of the History Center, and a chance to meet author Liza Walsh. Liza worked with the students to develop their written narratives. The web site will be devoted to local history and will post narratives written by the students, “then and now” pictures, photos of the tunnel books, and links to related sites.

Local history is a major component of the social studies curriculum in the third grade at CRES. The students worked in small groups under adult supervision to read a variety of source material and took notes before writing several drafts of their historical narratives. Liza Walsh provided several mini-lessons about the writing process and injecting voice into one’s writing.

“Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know and Do” June 17

Twelve of the warmest years on record have been since 1998. The year 2012 was the warmest year on record in the U.S., and June 2013 was one of the world’s warmest Junes on record. As our planet warms, extreme weather events are becoming more and more common – causing loss of life and costing taxpayers billions of dollars annually. We are certainly aware of the dire predictions of our changing climate. How could we not be? News about deadly heat waves, destructive storms, devastating drought, flash flooding, shrinking water tables, melting ice, and rising sea levels are widespread in our media and daily conversations.

Dave and Sue Oakes will present “Climate Change: what everyone needs to know and do” at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday, June 17 at 7:00 pm. Dave and Sue participated in a climate leaders training program in July 2013 led by former Vice President Al Gore. Some of the information they will present is from Al Gore’s personal slide show, including up-to-date data and trends. The talk will briefly introduce how and why our climate is changing and focus on what can be done about it.  The talk will look at both the “science” and the “social science” of climate change, and explore actions that each of us can take to mitigate the effects of climate change. Dave and Sue Oakes are co-founders of the Center for Ecological Living and Learning (CELL) in Hope, Maine.

The Department of Energy states that the damage to the electric grid alone from severe hurricanes, winter storms, heat waves and floods since 2003 has cost an average 33 billion dollars per year. When we include the social costs of carbon (e.g. decreases in agricultural productivity and human health, and property damage), future costs are staggering to consider.” And we know the culprit of it all,” says Oakes, “our addiction to burning fossil fuels. Knowing the source of the problem, however, does not necessarily lead to quick and systemic solutions.”

 “What is at the root of the problem? Why aren’t we doing more to solve it? Why should we? What can we do to make a difference? What role can one life play in making a difference? How do we work in community to bring about change?

Story Corps “Day of Listening”

Story Corps “Day of Listening” June 11

Following up on the visit that StoryCorps made to the Camden Public Library in May, the Library will host a “Day of Listening” to give everyone interested in the stories a chance to hear them. Six interviewees related their stories to friends while the StoryCorps team recorded. The interviews will be played in the library’s Picker Room throughout the afternoon of Wednesday, June 11, starting at noon. The participants include Paul Marshall, Stell Shevis, Seth Silverton, James Wadsworth, Gordon Harris, and Abby Norman.

The project, “Every Story Counts: Everyday Stories for Everyday People” was funded by the Branta Foundation. StoryCorps provides people of all backgrounds and beliefs the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of their lives. It is a great opportunity for community members to tell their own stories and to bring someone who is important to them to share in the conversation with them.

Nikki Maounis, Director of the Camden Library, says that “We were very excited to host StoryCorps here. As evidenced by their work, they do a fine job recording real America. After all, libraries are, and always have been, the keeper of the world’s stories. Facilitating the telling of those stories, and making sure they are recorded and preserved, is really just another part of our mission.”

Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 45,000 interviews with nearly 90,000 participants. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to their weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition.

"Freedom Schooner Amistad was built at Connecticut's Mystic Seaport in 1999 and launched on March 25, 2000.

The re-created Amistad was built using traditional skills and traditional construction techniques common to wooden schooners built in the 19th century. Some of the tools used in the project were the same as those that might have been used by a 19th century shipwright. Tri-Coastal Marine, designers of Freedom Schooner Amistad, used modern computer technology to provide plans for the vessel, bronze bolts are used as fastenings throughout the ship, the modern Amistad has an external ballast keel made of lead and two Caterpillar diesel engines. None of this technology was available to the early 19th century builders.

Portland Ovations Members Get First Look at New Season

PORTLAND, Maine - Wednesday night at the Masonic Temple on Congress Street Portland Ovations unveiled their 84th season to Ovations Members and guests at their Annual Members-Only Preview Party.

With the capacity-crowd buzzing about what the non-profit performing arts presenter may bring to greater Portland next year, Executive Director Aimée M. Petrin stepped into the spotlight and announced an eclectic season, featuring artists from as far away as Pakistan and as close to home as Fort Kent. Wild Double Play Seals Sea Dogs 2-1 Win

Portland plates two in the first, hangs on in the ninth

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (35-18) scored early and staved off a late comeback to down the New Britain Rock Cats (22-29) 2-1 Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The win is Portland's only in the series and improves the home record to 19-8.

After falling in the two games Wednesday, the Sea Dogs came out fast and furious against Tyler Duffey and the Rock Cats. The righty dismissed Mookie Betts to begin the game, but was tagged for two runs on four straight hits.

Deven Marrero singled and stole second before Stefan Welch doubled off the centerfield wall and plated him, giving Portland the 1-0 lead. Blake Swihart singled to put runners at the corners for Sean Coyle who doubled the lead with a double to left and gave the 'Dogs the 2-0 lead.

From there it was all about the arms. Henry Owens climbed the hill for the 'Dogs and was in complete control. After two base runners reached against the lefty in the first, Owens went on to retire the next 15 of 16 batters in a row.

His toughest inning was his final inning, the seventh. The big lefty gave up a single to Daniel Ortiz and walked
