Pirates Return Home, Face Worcester

Pirates (23-30-2-8, 56 points) vs. Sharks (31-29-3-1, 66 Points), 7:00 PM EDT
Lewiston, Maine - The Portland Pirates return to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Wednesday after 15 days away from home to take on the Worcester Sharks. Puck drop is set for 7 PM for the final regular season home matchup between the Pirates and Sharks. Worcester holds a 6-4 lead in the season series.

Portland was victorious in their last game, a 4-2 defeat of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sunday afternoon. Lucas Lessio and Jordan Szwarz provided power play goals, while Randy Jones scored shorthanded and Jordan Martinook added an empty netter to seal the win. Louis Domingue won his second straight start, making 24 saves in the victory and improving his record against Bridgeport to 3-0. Both Jordan Szwarz and Lucas Lessio extended point streaks to three games, with Szwarz tallying his third goal in as many games.

The Sharks dropped a 2-1 decision to the Providence Bruins Sunday afternoon. Providence jumped out to a 2 goal lead, and despite a late goal from Dan DaSilva, the Sharks were unable to close the gap. Harri Sateri made 28 saves in the defeat for Worcester, who sit 11 points outside a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Pirates last faced Worcester on March 8th, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Sharks. Worcester jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Pirates were able to close the gap twice. Daine Todd and Jordan Martinook scored for the Pirates, while Louis Domingue made 34 saves in the defeat. The loss snapped a two game point streak for the Pirates.

Worcester head coach Roy Sommer will break the AHL record for games coached tonight, as he will be behind the bench for his 1,257th career game. Sommer, a former Maine Mariner who won the Calder Cup with the team in 1983-84, has spent his entire coaching career with the San Jose Sharks organization, starting with the Kentucky Thoroughblades.

With Mike Smith’s injury in Phoenix, the Coyotes have recalled goaltender Mark Visentin from the Pirates. Louis Domingue will be the Pirates starter, with Chris Rawlings, recalled from the CHL’s Arizona Sundogs yesterday, backing him up.

KeyBank Key to the Game

All Eyes on Louis: With Visentin’s recall, Louis Domingue will be the Pirates starter until Mike Smith is fully recovered. Riding a two game winning streak, Domingue’s play will dictate the Pirates’ performance going forward.

Tonight’s game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR FM 105.5/AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
