Bath, Maine - Reveal your inner botanist! The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) will offer a free Winter Tree Identification walk on Saturday, February 16 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Thorne Head Preserve in Bath in celebration of Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.
How do you identify a tree if it has no leaves? With a little experience you can learn to use the clues of twigs, branch structure, and bark to figure out the trees of the forest, even without characteristic foliage. Participants will learn to recognize these hints and master a simple dichotomous key- a common identification tool used by experienced botanists. KELT staff member Chris Cabot will lead participants and share the knowledge he gained through years of walking in the woods of New England.
Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, started in spring 2012, is an array outdoor events across Maine on February 15-17. Its goal is to promote connection with the natural world, fun and physical activity, and good health.
Dress with warm outerwear and footwear, snowshoes are encouraged if conditions are appropriate. In the event of bad weather and poor driving conditions, the event will be rescheduled. To get to Thorne Head Preserve from downtown Bath, go north on High Street which dead ends into the parking lot of the preserve.
