Film: The Show that Shook the World

BLUE HILL, Maine - Filmmaker Richard Miller will present and talk about his new film, The Show That Shook the World: Marcel Duchamp and the 1913 Armory Show, at the Blue Hill Public Library at 7:00 PM on Friday June 20. Reportedly, “one of the most influential events in the history of modern art,” occurred on February 17, 1913 at the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue in New York. A huge exhibition of modern art, featuring a large selection of “unknown” Europeans such as Picasso, Matisse and Gauguin, drew 80,000 viewers.

The show created a big stir and drew much negative criticism, including the now iconic painting, Nude Descending a Staircase, by Marcel Duchamp

“Nietzsche on Hardship” Film & Discussion December 19

Rockland, Maine - Join us at Rockland Public Library Thursday December 19 for a screening of “Nietzsche on Hardship” (24 min), part 6 of the Philosophy: A Guide to Happiness series. A discussion will follow the short film, led by Richard Fortuna, URock Student and Vice-President of the Honors Program.

In the video, Popular British Philosopher Alain De Botton (The Consolations of Philosophy, How Proust Can Change Your Life) explores Friedrich Nietzsche’s dictum that any worthwhile achievements in life come from the experience of overcoming hardship. For him, any existence that is too comfortable is worthless, as are the twin refugees of drink and religion.

“Singlehandedly, De Botton has taken philosophy back to its simplest and most important purpose: helping us live our lives.” Independent.

This is one in a continuing Thursday series of literary, film and cultural offerings sponsored by Rockland Public Library and the Friends of the Rockland Public Library. The Friends Community Room is located in the lower level of the library. Admission is free. On The Set of "Catatonk Blues" Filming In Rockland

Rockland, Maine - Ever wonder what it would be like to be in a major motion picture? We spent Tuesday on the set of "Catatonk Blues" starring Treat Williams, which has been filming in Rockland. We followed a group of extras through the whole process.

The day starts for this group of actors at 2 in the afternoon when they report to the set. First order of business, lunch. I like this business.

The next stop is the holding room. Where the actors wait.

Casting director, James Stiles explains how the day will go and what the actors can expect next.

More waiting.

Next the aspiring actors are taken to wardrobe five at a time for paperwork and wardrobe.

After wardrobe it is back outside for more waiting while all the actors get through wardrobe.

All during this time the crew is moving equipment.

Like ants of bees they hurry in and out of the building, carrying wires , cables, clamps and chairs from the trucks parked out back.

Soon the auditorium is ready for the big town hall scene. The lights are up and the cameras are all in place.

The wait is over. The director calls for all the actors in the big auditorium scene.

Director, Jared Martin and writer/ director,Bob Mrazek go over last minute details for the town meeting scene.

The actors are brought in and take their places in the auditorium.

Treat Williams, who plays a congressman who returns to his Maine island district, goes over last minute details with the crew.

The camera crews do their last checks before the first take.

Before the first take Treat Williams takes the time to fill the extras in on the movie, to set the scene and explain what is going to happen in this scene.
