Stewart Strikes in Overtime as Huskies Beat Wildcats 3-2; McKim Ties Program Record for Career Wins

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) scored 2:38 into overtime to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a thrilling 3-2 win against the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in Gorham. Stewart's game-winner was assisted by seniors Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia) and Amelie St-Amant (Ottawa, Ontario/ Ontario Hockey Academy). Stewart and St-Amant each had two points in the game. Stwart had an assist in addition to her goal and St-Amant assisted on two goals.
 
Huskies' fifth-year senior Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount

Academy) made 28 saves in the win. She has now tied Karen Jamnik (2000-2004) for the most wins in program history with 46.
 
Sophomore Ellie Eigner (Bowling Green, Ohio/ South Lyon East) and senior Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) also scored for Southern Maine. Senior Madelyn McLeish (Dedham, Mass.) and sophomore Shannon Murphy (Pembroke, Mass./Brewster Academy) had assists.

JWU: 5-7-1
Southern Maine: 7-6-2
 
Series History:
This afternoon's game was the 13th game between the two programs. The Huskies led the series 9-4 and have won each of the last three games.
 
The Goaltenders:
JWU: Leah White (0-4-0): 62:38, three goals allowed, 21 saves
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (6-6-2): 62:38, two goal allowed, 28 saves
 
How It Happened:

  • Eigner scored with 5:10 left to play in the first period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. McLeish and Stewart recorded the assists.
  • Johnson & Wales tied the game on a goal by Kailin Kane 5:57 into the second. The game remained tied despite each team committing two penalties over the next 10 minutes of action. The Huskies broke the tie when Stymiest scored on the rebound of a shot by Murphy with 3:10 left in the period.
  • A late penalty put the Wildcats on the power play in the final minutes of regulation and Allyson Barry fired a shot past McKim to tie the game with two minutes left on the clock.
  • Southern Maine dominated the possession in overtime and put two shots on goal that were saved by JWU's Leah White before Stewart delivered the game-winner. St-Amant, who was in the process of skating to the bench, kept the puck in the offensive zone with a pass to Stewart. Stewart then created space and ripped a high shot under the crossbar to give the Huskies the win.

 
Inside The Stats:

  • Stymiest now has eight goals on the season and leads the team. She entered the season with eight goals in her career.
  • The Wildcats led 33-29 in faceoff wins and 30-24 in shots on goal.
  • Both teams demonstrated willingness to get in front of the puck with JWU blocking 17 shots and the Huskies blocking 15. Eigner and junior Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/ Kimball Union Academy) each blocked two shots. St-Amant and juniors Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) and Caroline Thompson (Victoria, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) also stepped up defensively.
  • Both of Southern Maine's home wins this season have been overtime victories.
