Roundabout Construction in Standish

STANDISH - The Maine Department of Transportation is working to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Route 25, Manchester Road, and Saco Road in Standish. The goal of the project is to alleviate congestion on Manchester and Saco Roads. Daily lane closures will require alternating traffic patterns. The contractor doing the work is R.J. Grondin & Sons of Gorham. The project is expected to be finished by August 23rd.

NCAA W. SOCCER: DaGraca’s Overtime Goal Pushes Monks Past Blue Jays, 1-0‏

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman forward Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) scored in the 98th minute to propel Saint Joseph’s College (4-5-0, 2-1-0 GNAC) past University of Saint Joseph (3-5-0, 1-2-0 GNAC), 1-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s soccer match at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon.
 

THE LEAD 

DaGraca provided the Monks with the thrilling walk-off victory after receiving a lead pass from junior Desiree Parent (Westborough, Mass.) and eluding a defender on the right side of the box. With only USJ keeper Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) to beat, the first-year standout slipped an odd-angle shot into the left corner with 2:59 remaining in the first overtime period.
For DaGraca, the goal counted as her sixth of the season and first game-winner of her NCAA career.
 

NOTABLES
Senior forward Hannah LeBlanc (Andover, Mass.) paced the Royal Blue with six shots, including four on goal, in the victory.
 

For the Blue Jays, Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.), Nicole Aquillo (Hebron, Conn.) and Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, Conn.) recorded three shots apiece on the afternoon.
 

THE KEEPERS
Saint Joseph’s sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made six saves to post her second shutout of the season and sixth of her career. Aside from the saves, Troup made several key plays while leaving the net to challenge USJ players in 1v1 situations.
Dodge registered six stops for the visitors.
 

TEAM TOTALS
The conference counterparts played nearly even, with University of Saint Joseph owning a slight lead in shots (17-14) and corner kicks (6-5) in a losing bid. The Monks were flagged for eight fouls while the Blue Jays were slapped with five infractions.
 

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
With the win, Saint Joseph’s improves to 5-3-2 in the history of the series with University of Saint Joseph, a team that toppled the Monks by a 6-0 score – the largest losing deficit versus a GNAC team since joining the conference in 2007 – in Connecticut last fall.
Today’s triumph also counts as the Monks first overtime win since October 19th, 2013 when SJC slipped past Simmons, 1-0, in Boston.

Saint Joseph’s travels to Waterville, Maine on Monday for a 7:00 PM kick-off versus Thomas College (4-3-0, 1-0-0 NAC). Ross-Dyjak Goal Powers Southern Maine Over St. Joseph’s 1-0

Analies Ross-Dyjak netted the Huskies' game-winner for her first intercollegiate goal.

STANDISH, Maine – Junior Analies Ross-Dyjack (Orono, Maine/Environmental Science) scored in the sixth minute and senior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) made six saves to make it stand as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Monks 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, Southern Maine halts a two-game slide and bounces back to .500 on the season to stand at 3-3.  St. Joseph's sees its two-game winning streak come to an end and drops to 3-5 on the season.
Ross-Dyjack's goal came on the second shot of the game to quickly put the Huskies up a goal over their in-state rivals.  Ross-Dyjak converted the feed from freshman Sarah Michaud (Candia, N.H./Manchester Central) to earn her first collegiate goal and first game-winning goal.

Ross-Dyjack's early goal proved to be pivotal as both squads were limited in scoring opportunities with the Monks holding a 13-8 edge in shots for the game.

Temple made sure to take advantage of Ross-Dyjak's tally and earned her third shutout of the season to backstop the Huskies to victory.  Temple made four saves in the first half and turned back two more Monk attempts in the second. Equaling her career high of three shutouts set in 2014, Temple now has six shutouts in her career.  Monk starter sophomore Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) took the loss allowing one goal and making a pair of saves in 45 minutes of action.  Senior Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) started the second half for St. Joseph's making a pair of saves.

Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting UMass Boston.   St. Joseph's hosts St. Joseph's (Conn.) on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in a GNAC contest.

Monks Sweep Eagles, Move to 12-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's (12-0) remained undefeated with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-22) victory over Daniel Webster College (2-9) in non-conference volleyball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night. Junior outside hitter Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) notched a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs in the triumph.

The Monks would not trail in the first two sets as the hosts produced double-digit wins to claim a 2-0 cushion. The third set was tightly-contested however, as neither team led by more than three points until junior setter Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) delivered an ace to put her team up, 19-15 late in the final frame. The Eagles trailed 23-20 minutes later, but a Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) kill and a bad set by sophomore Courtney Warrington (Canton, Tex.) offset a Huntley attack error as the hosts rolled to their fifth-consecutive shutout victory.

For the Monks, senior middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, Mass.) netted seven kills and three total blocks, Gosselin added four kills and 12 digs, Hebert produced 19 assists, two service aces and seven digs, and freshman libero Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) chipped in a match-high 22 digs on the evening.

For the Eagles, sophomore middle blocker Hannah Koehler (Bedford, N.H.) registered four kills, junior outside hitter Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) tallied three kills and 12 digs, Warrington chimed in with 13 digs and three aces, and sophomore setter Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) contributed 10 assists and seven digs in the losing effort.

Saint Joseph's will host a tri-match this Saturday versus University of Saint Joseph (1:30 PM) and Maine-Fort Kent (5:30 PM). The Blue Jays and Bengals will face off in the sandwich match, which is slated to start at 3:30 PM. Daniel Webster travels to University of Saint Joseph for a 7:00 PM non-conference matchup on Thursday.

Monks Win SJC Autumn Invitational

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (11-0) captured the SJC Autumn Invitational Championship for the fifth time in the last seven years with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-12) title-match victory over Husson University (5-10) at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday. Senior middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) tallied seven kills with three solo blocks and garnered tourney MVP honors for the second time in her career.

The Monks opened the day with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-8) triumph over Eastern Nazarene College (3-9) while Husson defeated Maine-Presque Isle (0-11), 3-0 (25-21, 24-26, 25-9, 25-14) in the other 10:00 AM match on court two.

In the consolation match, Eastern Nazarene blanked Maine-Presque Isle, 3-0 (25-15, 25-7, 25-12).
With the two victories, the Monks extend their winning streak to a program-record 11 matches. Saint Joseph's swept all four matches in which the team played during the invitational tourney, which has been hosted at St. Joe's each of the last 16 years.

Saint Joseph's def. Eastern Nazarene, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-8)

The Monks were uncharacteristically slow out of the gates in the first set and fell into an 11-3 hole as a result. The hosts recovered with an 11-3 run of their own to knot the set at 14-14 and scored eight of 10 points down the stretch to take the first frame.

Saint Joseph's would not trail in the second and third sets to claim the shutout win and advance to the tournament title bout against Husson.

Junior Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) registered nine kills, five digs and a pair of aces while Wachowiak, Alli Hollander (Thermal, Calif.) and Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) contributed five kills apiece in the win over the Lions. Freshman libero Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) posted a match-high 18 digs, Gosselin added 11 digs, senior Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.) contributed eight digs and four aces, and senior Samantha Wright (Westport, Mass.) chipped in with three aces in the triumph.

For the Lions, junior Joanna Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) belted three kills, freshman Viviana Coix (Warrenville, Ill.) posted nine digs, and senior Hannah Welsh (Derry, N.H.) added seven digs, two kills and a pair of aces in the setback.

Husson def. Maine-Presque Isle, 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-9, 25-14)

Husson recovered from a second-set loss with decided victories in the third and fourth sets to advance to the SJC Autumn Invitational Championship.

Sophomore middle hitter Bailey Cote (Biddeford, Maine) led the charge for the Eagles by posting 11 kills, five solo blocks and four service aces while junior outside hitter Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, Maine) contributed seven kills and 13 digs versus the Owls. Sophomore setter Marissa Johnson (Russell, N.Y.) dealt 28 assists with a pair of aces and six digs and sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Wilson (Dover, N.H.) picked up 28 digs in the 10:00 AM match on court two.

Senior Morgan Swan (Caribou, Maine) paced the Owls with six kills and tied for the team-lead with 13 digs while junior Abby Jewett (Bar Harbor, Maine) registered five kills and 13 digs and senior Hannah Boyce (Bar Harbor, Maine) tallied five kills and eight digs in the setback. Freshman Hannah Williams (Park Falls, Nova Scotia) added 13 assists and senior Katie Patenaude (Presque Isle, Maine) chipped in with 12 digs in the losing effort.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Saint Joseph's def. Husson, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-12)

St. Joe's employed the dual threat of dominance at the net as well as on the serve in the sweep over Husson, as the Royal Blue boasted 21 kills with a .241 attack rate and 14 service aces in the title bout.
Wachowiak posted seven kills with three blocks while Huntley put up six kills and six digs with a pair of aces and Gosselin added five kills and eight digs in the win. Junior setter Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) totaled 15 assists, three digs and a pair of aces, Thompson chipped in with 16 digs and four aces and McPhee and Wright both delivered three service aces for the hosts.

Senior Emma Plouffe (Frankfort, N.Y.) led the Eagles with three kills while sophomore Nia Arranaga (San Jose, Calif.) tallied three aces, two kills and six digs in the losing bid. Sophomore Kaitlyn Carl (East Machias, Maine) contributed seven digs and Johnson dealt five assists in the closing match.

CONSOLATION: Eastern Nazarene def. Maine-Presque Isle, 3-0 (25-15, 25-7, 25-12)

The Lions picked up their second win of the tournament with the help of 22 kills and 22 aces as Joseph led the attack with eight kills and Welsh boasted six kills and six aces in the three-set sweep.
Sophomore Oksana DiCamillo (Nottingham Township, Pa.) contributed five aces and 10 digs for Eastern Nazarene while sophomore Kayla Dean (Lansdale, Pa.) recorded three kills, six assists, five aces and four digs in her team's final match of the annual tourney.

For the Owls, Boyce tallied four kills and three digs, Jewett posted three kills and 11 digs, Swan picked up a match-high 14 digs, and Williams dealt seven assists.

NCAA M. SOCCER: Terriers Score Late, Nip Monks 2-1‏

STANDISH, Maine – Thomas College (2-2-0) edged Saint Joseph’s College (2-3-1), 2-1, in a non-conference men’s soccer contest at Westerlea Way Field on Thursday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) made five saves in the losing effort.

Thomas held a 1-0 lead until the 53rd minute when freshman Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) netted his second goal of the season off an Austin Bell (Gorham, Maine) pass. The in-state rivals played fairly even in the second stanza as the match seemed destined for extra play before sophomore William Nilson (Vaxholm, Sweden) tapped in the game-winner at the 85:44 mark.

Taking advantage of a defensive lapse in the box, the Terriers opened the game scoring in the 18th minute on a play set up by senior midfielder Tre Ming (Devonshire, Bermuda), who collected a loose ball near midfield and sent it into the heart of the box. After an unlucky bounce, the ball found the foot of freshman forward Josh Emard (Lebanon, Maine), who ran in on the left and drove a shot into the right corner.

The 1-0 advantage remained until the 53rd minute, when Bell and Mattos connected to knot the game at 1-1. Running down the right side and into the corner, Bell fought off several defenders and dealt a perfect crossing pass to Mattos, who was stationed near the left post and tapped the ball in past diving junior keeper Joakim Sternas (Stockholm, Sweden).

Both teams had opportunities to take the lead but neither would do so until the 86th minute when Nilson collected a high bouncing ball near the top of the box and placed a kick to the left side of the net for the game-winner.

Thomas held a 13-9 lead in shots while Saint Joseph’s owned a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon. Sternas made six saves for the Terriers.

Saint Joseph’s will host GNAC-rival Rivier University this Saturday at 3:00 PM while Thomas returns to the pitch with a game at Bates College at 2:00 PM on Saturday.

Terriers Beat Monks 2-1

STANDISH, ME – The Thomas College men's soccer team defeated Saint Joseph's College in a non-conference matchup 2-1.  Sophomore William Nilson scored the game-winning goal for the Terriers in his first game of the season.

The Terriers opened the scoring 17 minutes in the game when Josh Emard continued his scoring ways to give the Red and Black a 1-0 lead.  Senior captain Tre Ming sent in a ball from midfield which after a few deflections found the foot of Emard who sent in the opening goal.  The score remained the same into halftime with the Terriers having a 10-4 advantage in shots.

At the 53rd minute of the second, Brett Mattos netted his second goal of the season off an Austin Bell pass tied the score one. Thomas regained the lead with five minutes to play when Nilson tapped in the game-winner to seal the 2-1 victory for the Terriers.

Junior goalie Joakim Sternas was awarded the victory for the Terriers with a six save performance.  Monks' keeper Scott Benner was given the loss with five saves.

The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, September 18 when they play Bates College in a 2:00 pm contest in Lewiston, Maine.

2015 SJC Athletics Hall of Fame Class Inducted

STANDISH, Maine - The 13th class of the Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Hall of Fame was enshrined with a ceremony at the Mercy Dining Hall on the evening of Saturday, September 12th. Stephen Chase ’93 (Basketball), Robert Doyle (Baseball), Billie L’Heureux ’91 (Basketball) and Joe Manganaro ’05 (Golf) are the latest to enter the Monks’ hallowed hall.

The addition of this year’s class brings the Athletics Hall of Fame membership to a total of 78 accomplished individuals and teams.

The evening began with a reception in the Harold Alfond Center, which included an unveiling of the plaques for each of the newest members in the Hall of Fame Room, which was constructed in 2014. President Dr. James Dlugos kicked off the evening with a brief introductory address in the Hall of Fame Room.

Field Hockey Wins Home-Opener, 4-0‏

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (1-1) blanked New England College (0-4), 4-0, in a non-conference field hockey game at Mercy Field on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Michalia Parent (Westborough, Mass.) scored a goal and added an assist in the shutout effort.

The Monks dominated the stat sheet and maintained possession in the Pilgrim’s defensive end for the majority of play in their 2015 home opener, as the hosts outshot the visitors by a 42-0 margin with a 25-0 lead in penalty corners on the afternoon.

New England sophomore goalkeeper Michaela Clark (Dorchester, Mass.) played very well despite the final tally, making a whopping 31 saves while maintaining a respectable score in the complete-game performance.

Bonny Eagle Girls Soccer Rescheduled, MSAD 6 Cancelled All After School Activities

Standish, Maine - Bonny Eagle has rescheduled girls soccer with McAuley to tomorrow, Thursday, September 10th, 2015 and MSAD 6 has postponed all after school activities for today, Wednesday, September 9th, 2015.


According to Bonny Eagle, "Today's girls soccer game at McAuley has been rescheduled to tomorrow at 4:00".


MSAD 6 states, "MSAD 6 has cancelled all after school activities today due to heat, including practices and games".

Caron & Letourneau Collect GNAC Weekly Accolades

STANDISH, Maine – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honors have been announced and a pair of Saint Joseph’s College golfers have earned acclaim.

Junior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) and freshman Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) have been selected as the GNAC Corvais Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Caron led the Monks to their first top finish since 2007 with a 74 card in the Maine-Farmington Invitational last Thursday. He tied for fourth with Letourneau with the score and helped SJC post the program's second-lowest 18-hole score (298) since 1999.

For Caron, the GNAC weekly award is the ninth of his collegiate career.

Letourneau opened his NCAA career by shooting a 74 in the Maine-Farmington Invitational. The freshman tied for the team scoring lead and helped the Monks claim their first top finish since 2007.

Saint Joseph’s hosts the 13th Annual John Queenan Tournament today at the Point Sebago Golf Resort in Casco.

Wachowiak Chosen as GNAC Offensive & Defensive Player of the Week

STANDISH, Maine – The first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly awards have been released and Saint Joseph’s College senior middle blocker has been named as the GNAC Corvais Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.

Wachowiak propelled the Monks to a 2-0 start by tallying 29 kills and 14 total blocks while posting a .309 attack rate over eight sets last week. The senior middle blocker registered 17 kills with seven total blocks (five solo) against Maine Maritime on Wednesday and added 12 kills with seven additional rejections in a 3-0 triumph over Lesley University on Saturday.

The three-time All-GNAC honoree is well on her way to registering some of the best numbers not only in the history of SJC volleyball but in the conference as well. As of September 7th, Wachowiak has totaled 966 kills and 354 total blocks and already owns the career record in the latter category. She ranks behind former teammate Sarah Hawkes ’13 in career kills (1,107) and is within reach of the GNAC career total blocks record, which is currently owned by Pine Manor’s Amanda Dennis ’09, who totaled 421 rejections over four seasons.

For Wachowiak, the GNAC weekly accolade is the 11th of her outstanding career. This week’s dual honor is a career first and also the first for an SJC player since the team joined the GNAC in the fall of 2007.

Saint Joseph’s will host Colby College in the team’s 2015 home opener at 7:00 PM tonight.

NCAA VOLLEYBALL: Monks Fight Past Mules, 3-1‏

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (3-0) rallied from a 1-0 set deficit to defeat Colby College (0-1), 3-1 (22-25, 29-27, 25-9, 25-18), in non-conference women’s volleyball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night. Senior middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) totaled 13 kills and broke her own single-game total blocks record with 13, including nine solo, in the triumph.

The Mules, playing in their 2015 season-opener, started the night with a hard fought 25-22 victory in the opening set, but the Monks gained all the momentum with an exciting 29-27 win in the second set and proceeded to claim the four-set triumph with large-margin wins in the third and fourth frames.

Maine-Fort Kent Tops Saint Joseph’s, 3-2

STANDISH, Maine – University of Maine-Fort Kent (6-0-0) edged Saint Joseph’s College (1-1-1), 3-2, in a non-conference men’s soccer contest at Westerlea Way Field on a muggy Monday afternoon. Monks goalkeepers Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) and Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) split the match in net and combined to make 11 saves in the loss.

Fort Kent wasted no time getting on the board, as the visitors scored twice in the first three minutes of the game. Senior Ross Downie (Edinburgh, Scotland) scored on the Bengals’ first shot of the match just 17 seconds into play and senior Daniel Blackwood (Black Rives, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) placed a shot past Benner at the 2:38 mark to make it a 2-0 game before fans had a chance to settle in their seats. Kalusha Kotes (Montego Bay, Jamaica) was credited with an assist on the latter tally.

To the Monks’ credit, the early deficit did little to affect their efforts as the hosts quickly bounced back

NCAA M. SOCCER: Monks and Huskies Duel to 1-1 Stalemate in Season Opener‏

Standish, Maine - Saint Joseph’s College (0-0-1) opened the 2015 season with a 1-1 deadlock versus University of Southern Maine (0-0-1) at Westerlea Way Field on Tuesday evening. Freshman forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) netted his first collegiate goal, off an Austin Bell (Gorham, Maine) pass, in the 62nd minute to tie the game, which ended nearly 60 minutes later in a 1-1 tie.

The Huskies struck first, as freshman forward Jonathan Bobe (Portland, Maine) redirected a corner kick with a header past Monks’ senior keeper Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) with 4:28 left in the first half. Senior midfielder Adam Simpson (Scarborough, Maine), who sent the ball in the box on the right corner, was credited with an assist on the play.

After a lackluster first half, the Monks kicked off the second stanza with much improved pace and sustained the effort for the remainder of the contest. Junior midfielder Johnny Thomas (Boston, Mass.) led the performance with multiple scoring chances over the first 15 minutes of the latter half, including a wide-angle shot that clanged off the left post in the 52nd minute.

Saint Joseph’s finally hit pay dirt in the 62nd minute when Bell sent a free kick into the box, finding
