Maine Lobster Festival Gives To Oceanside High School Class of 2018
Rockland, Maine - On November 30th, 2016, The Maine Lobster Festival Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to donate $1,500 in support of the Oceanside High School Class of 2018.
“The unfortunate circumstance resulting in the loss of Class of 2018 funds has been a difficult one." Said MLF Board President Cynthia Powell. “These students have worked hard to fundraise and they shouldn't have to bear the burden. So many of these kids and their families volunteer their time at the Maine Lobster Festival each year. We appreciate all of their support, and we knew that we had to do something to help. It has always been the mission of the Lobster Festival to give back to our local communities. We are encouraged that other individuals and businesses have already stepped up to assist the Class of 2018, and we hope more will join in that effort.”
A parent volunteer in charge of the bank account for the Class of 2018 is accused of stealing more than $8,000 from the fund for personal use. Students and their families raised the money over a period of three years to be used for graduation expenses for students.

Bixby & Co., LLC Moving Operations To Rockland
Bixby & Co., LLC, makers of BIXBY BARS, will be moving from its current location in the Coastal Farms Food Hub and Incubation Facility for new manufacturing businesses in Belfast in order to expand its operations in Rockland, effective March 1, 2014. Founded in 2011, Bixby & Co. invented unique chocolate bars known as BIXBY BARS: Organic chocolate + fruit + nuts + spice = real food. Bixby & Co. has recently been notified that it is a finalist in the 2014 Good Food Awards aimed at creating and promoting ethical and sustainable foods.
Owner, Kate McAleer, acknowledged the support and help from Coastal Farms & Foods. "It was really a great fit for us when we moved to Maine in March 2013 from the Hudson Valley region of New York State. The owners of Coastal Farms and its staff have been extremely supportive and the food hub offered what we needed at the time." It is now time for us to move on to our own facility, says McAleer. "Our wholesale business continues to grow and that will require us to have more space to expand our output."
Bixby will be leasing the former ice factory space from O'Hara Corporation in Rockland, Maine. “We looked at a number of possible locations and this space simply meets our needs.” said McAleer.
“We at Coastal Farms & Foods are pleased to have been able to work with Bixby & Co. at a time when they were in need of food processing and storage space. They moved into our facility in late March and were up and running in two days. In addition to significantly expanding their business while at Coastal Farms, they have provided help and advice to other food producers using our facilities to incubate and grow their businesses.
Bixby & Co. is a perfect example of the role Coastal Farms is playing in the development of local food production businesses. We wish them well as they continue to grow, said Wayne Snyder of Coastal Farms.”
“The Mid Coast is very fortunate to have Coastal Farms and Foods as a food hub and incubator. It is a great place to have a start-up food business. It is set up for just this reason. We were lucky to be referred to Coastal Farms and Food," said McAleer.

Rosie and Opal Come Home to Hope
Hope, Maine - Asian elephants Rosie and Opal arrived safely on Saturday at Hope Elephants in Hope, Maine.
Rosie and Opal, retired circus elephants with joint and muscle ailments, are the first residents of the Hope Elephants facility, which was created by Dr. Jim Laurita, a Cornell educated veterinarian, and Tom Laurita, his brother.
“I am so pleased to see Rosie and Opal settling into their new home at our Hope Elephants facility,” said Jim Laurita, executive director. “Hope Elephants has been working toward this day for over two years, and we could not have done it without an outpouring of support from the Maine community.”
Hope Elephants, a 401(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, has two purposes: to care for elephants who have medical needs by employing state-of-the-art veterinary therapeutic treatments and to serve as an educational platform for the issues of wildlife conservation using the example of elephants.
“The arrival of Rosie and Opal is an important milestone for Hope Elephants, but it is only the first step toward our organization’s dual goals of elephant care and education,” said Tom Laurita, cofounder. “We will now be able to begin actively working to improve the health of these two wonderful animals and building on the educational outreach that we’ve already started.”
Prior to the arrival of the elephants, Hope Elephants worked with local schools, scout groups and summer camps to provide educational programming centered on elephants and conservation. With the arrival of the elephants, Hope Elephants will significantly expand its educational mission, including the offering of a specific curriculum that will be made available to local educators and delivered in conjunction with a visit to the facility by school groups.
“The conservation issues surrounding elephants are at a critical point. Everyone should read ‘Blood Ivory’, the cover story in the October issue of National Geographic,” urged Tom Laurita. “People may not realize that tens of thousands of elephants are slaughtered each year for their tusks, and that in both Asia and Africa they are endangered. We want to play our small role in raising consciousness about these incredible animals.”
After a period of time to allow the elephants to adjust to their new home, Hope Elephants will begin welcoming the public to the facility by appointment for an educational presentation and to meet Maine’s new residents.
Justin McAnaney, Hope Elephants director of operations, explained the process: “Rosie and Opal will need a period of two to four weeks to acclimate. During that time we ask our friends and supporters to be patient and let them get used to their new home in Maine. When the elephants have settled in, the public will be able to visit in small groups by appointment. In order to provide the optimal environment for the elephants, the facility will not be open to walk-up visitors.”
Progress may be followed through the organization’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/hopeelephants, which can be viewed without signing into the social network.
Those wishing to schedule a visit may contact the organization at 207-619-4801 or by email at info@hopeelephants.org.

During that time we ask our friends and supporters to be patient and let them get used to their new home in Maine. When the elephants have settled in, the public will be able to visit in small groups by appointment. In order to provide the optimal environment for the elephants, the facility will not be open to walk-up visitors.”

Manufacturing Facility and New Jobs Headed to York County
Augusta, Maine - It is further proof that manufacturing is alive and well in the State of Maine. The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) announce a new manufacturing facility in York County. Archer Machine will soon be up and running in the Town of Limington.
As a precision machine shop, Archer will produce industrial valves for use on submarines and aircraft carriers. The valves also serve as vital components for power plants and waste water systems.
DECD has spent the last several months working with Archer as the company prepared for this exciting opportunity. Governor's Account Executive, Kristine Schuman helped Archer identify the most beneficial incentive programs and make the necessary connections to facilitate the purchase of upgraded equipment.
"As a new small business owner that is just starting out, getting access to tax incentives in a timely manner is huge," said Archer Machine President, Michael Hanes.
Hanes says he is planning to hire five people immediately, all with average salaries of almost $40,000. His goal over the next three to five years is to triple that number as work and demand for orders picks up. "I could have started this business anywhere in the country but Maine is where I want to be and where I believe the best quality workers are," added Hanes.
"Advances in manufacturing technology have created tremendous career opportunities," said DECD Commissioner, George Gervais. "The challenge continues to be bridging that gap between what businesses need and what they have available to them in terms of a workforce," continued Gervais.
Initial investments planned by Archer are estimated at around $600,000, which include improvements to 482 Sokokis Avenue in Limington, the former home of Metal Works Inc.
