Bristol, Maine – Maine game wardens locate a missing Bristol man early this morning. The Maine Warden Service was called around 7:30 last evening to search for Willem Jansen, 82, from Round Pond, located within the town of Bristol. Jansen suffers from Alzheimer’s and was reported missing by his wife Alexandria. Jansen was last seen by his wife yesterday afternoon at 12:30 walking Route 32 to another property they own in Bristol. This was a normal activity for him as indicated by his wife. Several game wardens and K9 units responded as well as members of Bristol Fire, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Dept. and Lincoln County EMA.

Jansen was found early this morning by Game Warden Kris MacCabe and his K9, a six-year-old black lab named Morgan. Jansen was located in some shallow water in the woods about 1/4 mile from road. Ambulance personal evaluated Jansen for hypothermia. He was released home at the scene. This early morning rescue most certainly saved Jansen’s life.

PEMAQUID BEACH TIDE POOL EXPLORATION

Bristol, Maine - Come explore Pemaquid Beach and learn about oceanography and beach ecology from naturalist, Jean McAlice, on Friday, August 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, as part of Beachcombers’ Rest Nature Center’s summer programming.  Prowl the sand dunes and wander over to the salt marsh viewing area.  Discover the tidal pools teeming with life, from mussels, crabs, worms, snails and barnacles to periwinkles, lichen, seaweed, rock weed, and maybe even sea lettuce.  Learn fascinating facts, like how barnacles, which are crustaceans, define the upper tide line, are dormant during the lower tides, feed when wet, shed their skin in late winter or early spring, and build limestone houses for themselves.  This program is for ages 13 and up, and pre-registration is required.  Pre-register by August 22 by calling PWA at 207-563-2196.  The workshop is free, but participants must pay the Town’s admission fee to Pemaquid Beach Park.

Beachcombers’ Rest Nature Center is a collaboration between the Bristol Parks and Recreation Commission and the Pemaquid Watershed Association, a volunteer-based, membership-supported non-profit organization that has been conserving the natural resources of the Pemaquid Peninsula since 1966. To reach the Center from Damariscotta, take the Bristol Road (State Rte 130) about 12 miles. Take the first right about 50 yards after the Fire Department (and just before Hanna's Store) onto Snowball Hill Road. Travel 9/10ths of a mile. At the bottom of the hill, on the left, there is a sign for the entrance to Pemaquid Beach Park. Workshop participants should gather in the community room on the right side of the Park pavilion building.  This program will be cancelled if weather is inclement (as Pemaquid Beach Park closes on bad-weather days); call 677-2754 for information about the Park.

BEACHSCAPES CONTEST AT PEMAQUID BEACH AUG. 26‏

Bristol, Maine - Enjoy the fun of mixing white quartz sand with creative imagination at Pemaquid Beach with Beachcombers’ Rest Nature Center’s (BRNC) good-spirited Beachscapes Contest on Saturday, August 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., weather permitting.  Contestants are encouraged to let whimsy and fantasy be their guides in the construction of castles, sea creatures, forts, or even raked sand gardens adorned with rocks, seaweed, or found objects.

Sign up that day at BRNC between 10:00 a.m. and noon to receive a numbered stake and reserve a space on the beach.  All constructions will be visited by Nature Center officials, and prizes will be awarded in the park’s picnic area at 2:00 by King Neptune and Queen Neptune.  In the spirit of this non-competitive contest, each registered participant will receive an individualized certificate and prize ribbon.  Participants will be responsible for leaving their site tidy after the contest.  BYOS (bring your own shovel). The program is free, with paid admission to the Park.  To reach the Park from Damariscotta, take the Bristol Road (State Rte 130) about 12 miles.  Take the first right about 50 yards after the Fire Department (and just before Hanna's Store) onto Snowball Hill Road. Travel 9/10ths of a mile. At the bottom of the hill, on the left, there is a sign for the entrance to Pemaquid Beach Park (there's also a smaller Beachcombers' Rest Nature Center sign).

Typically more than 25 families participate in a Beachscapes Contest.  At past contests, Pemaquid Beach has teemed with children and adults busily focused on creating everything from ornate castles and multi-tiered complexes to a dog, a sun, a seal, a sea dragon, a massive guitar with long strands of seaweed for strings, a tall pyramid encased in seashells, and even a miniature of a harbor scene complete with lighthouse, dock, and buoys.  There also have been huge turtles, one with a nest of eggs; lobsters, one in a trap constructed from driftwood, and a long snake that had just eaten a rat.  With a very clever use of seaweed for hair and shells for adornment, full-size mermaids have emerged from the sand, and one of them once innovatively employed a hot and sandy contestant as the form around which the mermaid was sculpted.  Come see what inspiration brings this year!

She has been an assistant professor at Bates College and has served the State of Maine's Department of Marine Resources as chief lobster biologist and leader of the Division of Biological Monitoring for the lobster, shrimp, herring, and urchin fisheries. Cowan earned her Ph.D. from the Boston University Marine Program and continued her studies as a Fellow at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1999 and 2005.
