Mayor Brennan congratulates local organization and thanks them for nearly a century of service to the community
What: At a ceremony tomorrow, the Portland Kiwanis will officially celebrate 95 years of service to the Portland area. The Portland Kiwanis Club, founded in 1917, is the oldest Kiwanis Club in Maine and for nearly a century, the club’s members have dedicated themselves to serving the community. Some projects that the club has worked on include the renovation and rededication of the Portland Observatory, which was purchased by the club and after restoration and rededication was deeded to the City of Portland in 1939, contributing funds for the construction of the Kiwanis Pool, the only public outdoor swimming pool in the city, which open to the public in 1962, and on an on-going basis provide funds to support the city’s aquatic programs. More recently, the Portland Kiwanis Club has supported and fundraised for a number of local nonprofits.
“Portland Kiwanis has a longstanding history of giving back to the city and I congratulate them on their 95th birthday,” stated Mayor Michael Brennan. “Few people realize that were it not for the support of the Kiwanis, the futures of the Portland Observatory and Kiwanis Pool would have been uncertain, but thanks to their dedication to the community and service, both are landmarks cherished and enjoyed by the entire community.”
