Maine high school graduation rate up, achievement gaps down

Newly released state and federal data shows Maine is closing achievement gaps as graduation rates among economically disadvantaged students, those with disabilities and some minorities are on the rise and above national averages
AUGUSTA, Maine – Maine’s high school graduation rate has hit an all-time high, as has the percentage of students who are either economically disadvantaged or have a disability and are earning their diploma in four years.

According to newly released data from the Maine Department of Education, 86.48 percent of the students who entered the ninth grade in the fall of 2010 graduated on time in 2014. That’s up just slightly from 86.36 percent in 2013 and well above the 80.3 percent graduation rate reached in 2009-2010 when the current calculation method was introduced.

In announcing the rising rate, Maine’s Acting Education Commissioner Tom Desjardin said he is

Maine high school students show improvements in math, writing and science scores

Performance of third-year high school students increased slightly in math, writing and science, but most students still aren’t achieving grade-level expectations yet are still being allowed to graduate

AUGUSTA, Maine – Maine high school juniors improved their scores in math, writing and science on last spring’s statewide standardized tests, but less than half of students are performing at grade level and many will still graduate anyway.

The percentage of students who achieved proficiency or above in math as measured by the SAT given last May to nearly 13,000 Mainers in grade 11 was 48.5 percent, up from 47.7 percent in 2012-13.

This marks the first time since 2006 when the SAT was first administered as the required State assessment for high school students that math scores have outpaced those for critical reading and was the second highest math result in that nine year period.

After ticking up the previous year to 48.6 percent proficient or above, critical reading scores were

Provost wills Ponies to win over Old Town

Provost wills Ponies to win over Old Town

Old Town, Maine - After three straight losses by two runs or less, the FA baseball team desperately needed a strong outing from Jesse Provost at Old Town on Saturday, and the junior did not disappoint, delivering a brilliant complete-game performance that allowed the Ponies to defeat the Coyotes 4-3 despite some shoddy defense and another lackluster offensive performance. Provost was in total command all afternoon, throwing 65 of 97 pitches for strikes, striking out eight batters, yielding just three hits and two walks, and allowing no earned runs. He is now 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 19 innings pitched.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd when Cameron Archer’s two-out ground ball got through the left side of the Ponies’ infield, scoring Patrick Quimby from third. Trevor Francis attempted to score from second on the play but was gunned down at the plate by left fielder Hunter Law. The Ponies then used four walks, an error, a balk, a stolen base, and three wild pitches to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the 4th. Andrew Richardson’s two-out single cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th, but the Ponies were able to add a valuable insurance run when Forrest Law legged out an infield single to score Shinsuke Mikame in the 7th.

Things got dicey in Old Town’s final at bat. Adam Boucher opened the frame with a single, and Tyler Lynch then reached on an error. Provost bore down and struck out Jonny Toole after a lengthy battle, but Zac Miller  worked a walk to load the bases with one out. Leadoff man Gabe Melmed then crushed a ball into the left-center gap, but Hunter Law made another huge defensive play, tracking the ball down and also holding the tying run on second base (Boucher tagged from third to make it 4-3). Provost then buckled down and punched out Francis to preserve the hard-fought win.

Second baseman Caleb Richard continued to swing a hot bat for the Ponies, singling sharply twice and lining out to left field in three trips. The junior paces the Ponies with a .407 batting average and has scored a team-high 11 runs. Ryan Rebar and Forrest Law had the Ponies’ only other hits, and Mikame drew two walks and stole two bases.

The win improves the Ponies to 5-4 and bumps them all the way up to #3 in the Class B Heal Point standings. They will next take on top-ranked and undefeated John Bapst at FA on Thursday at 4:30. Ryan Rebar will be on the mound.

"Jane By Design", a new series from ABC Family is set to premiere January 3rd, 2012 at 8pm. About Jane Quimby a fresh-faced fashionista juggling life both as a regular high school student and as an assistant to a high-powered fashion executive, all while trying to keep her true identity a secret in the series premiere of ABC Family's new original series "Jane By Design" on Tuesday, January 3rd (9:00 - 10:00 PM ET/PT). The one-hour original drama stars newcomer Erica Dasher, David Clayton Rogers ("Cougar Town"), Nicholas Roux ("Lemonade Mouth"), Rowly Dennis ("Desperate Housewives"), India De Beaufort ("One Tree Hill"), Meagan Tandy ("10 Things I Hate About You"), Matthew Atkinson ("CSI") and featuring Andie MacDowell ("Footloose," "Four Weddings and a Funeral").

"Jane By Design" follows Jane Quimby (Dasher), a quirky teen with an eclectic chic fashion sense, who lands a job at a hip fashion house when they mistake her for an adult. Torn between her love of fashion and the need to finish high school, Jane conceals her true age to assist the demanding, but talented Gray Chandler Murray (MacDowell), who travels the world in search of the next big style trend. Jane quickly learns that working for a successful executive in the cutthroat world of fashion brings on adversaries like India Jourdain (De Beaufort), an associate designer and Gray's former assistant, who is now gunning for Gray's job. Fortunately, Jane has the charming and handsome senior designer Jeremy Jones (Dennis) on her side -- and peaking her interest -- although she still harbors feelings for long-time crush, Nick Fadden (Atkinson), at school.

Jane's best friend, Billy Nutter (Roux), helps Jane keep up appearances as she toggles between two lives and loyally guards her secret from her older brother, Ben (Rogers). However, Billy has a secret of his own, hiding a relationship with Jane's high school nemesis, Lulu Pope (Tandy). Even with Billy's support, will Jane's ruse be a passing fad, or will she be able to fashion a career in the design business?
