GORHAM, Maine  –  Sophomore Simon Chadbourne (Westbrook, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s basketball team has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week.  Chadbourne’s most recent weekly accolade marks his second from the Little East Conference during the 2021-2022 season.

GORHAM, Maine  -   Closing the Little East Conference regular-season portion of its schedule with back-to-back wins, and three of its last four, the University of Southern Maine Huskies’ women’s basketball team has earned the fourth-seed for the upcoming Little East Conference Championship tournament, and the rights to a home quarterfinal game. 

 

Southern Maine completed the LEC regular season with a record of 7-7, and was unable to play a full LEC schedule due to COVID-related scheduling challenges.   It was determined by the LEC’s athletic directors earlier this season that all nine teams will play in the

GORHAM, Maine  -  Closing out its regular season, the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s basketball team will be the eighth seed in the upcoming 2022 Little East Conference Championship Tournament.  The Huskies will host ninth-seed Castleton University Spartans on Monday, February 21 (5:30 pm) in a first-round play-in game. The winner of the 8/9 game will advance to play top-seed and 2022 LEC Regular Season Champion UMass Dartmouth (22-3, 14-2 LEC) on Tuesday, February 22.

 

It was determined by the LEC’s athletic directors earlier this season that all nine teams will play in the tournament this season, due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. As a result,

BREAKING: Bar Harbor, Maine - We're learning that area departments as far away as Bangor are fighting a massive 4-alarm fire at Bluenose Inn off of Route 3 this evening in Bar Harbor, Maine.


We know at the time:


-Bangor Fire is on scene

-Side A has collapsed

-Potential of C/D corner collapse

-Lines repositioned to protect propane tanks

-Route 3 is closed

-Hotel is three stories tall

-Fire started around 2:30pm according to Bar Harbor Police

-Assistance has been requested from Penobscot County

Maine Delegation and Governor Mills Push for Delay of Unfair, Flawed Regulations on Lobster Industry

A lack of compliant gear is making it extremely difficult for lobstermen and women to meet the May 1st deadline. Failure to postpone the rule will cost the lobster industry $7.3 million.

For millennia, each newborn’s mother was a known certainty. Present at birth, she was plain to see. But the identity of each child’s father could only be surmised or taken on faith, based on the credibility of the mother and her known male acquaintances. And so, the principle “pater semper incertus est” (the father is always uncertain) seemed an immutable law of nature. The advent of modern paternity science would eventually remove much of this uncertainty, of course, but not to the extent that most people probably assume. While it’s true that today’s science can identify a child’s biological father, the social, cultural, and political nature of paternity continues to challenge the notion of paternal certainty. Who’s your daddy? Even in the age of DNA, the answer remains uncertain.

The University of Maine at Augusta Dental Health Clinic is hosting its annual “Give Kids a Smile Day” in partnership with the American Dental Association over a two day period this year.  The “Give Kids a Smile Day” will be held on February 11 and March 4 from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm at the UMA Dental Hygiene Clinic located on UMA’s Bangor campus at 201 Texas Avenue in Bangor. The two-day event helps to ensure that the same number of children will be served while maintaining all necessary COVID-19 protocols. The UMA Dental Hygiene Clinic operates according to the American Dental Association and Maine CDC recommended safety requirements and precautions.

Children ages five to 18, who do not have a dentist, can schedule free dental appointments to get cleanings, exams, x-rays, fluoride treatments, and dental hygiene education. Students from UMA’s Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs will be providing care with the aid of staff dentists and faculty members from UMA’s Dental Health Programs.

Human-induced climate change impacts the highest reaches of the planet — Mount Everest

Orono, Maine — Melting and sublimation on Mount Everest’s highest glacier due to human-induced climate change have reached the point that several decades of accumulation are being lost annually now that ice has been exposed, according to a University of Maine-led international research team that analyzed data from the world’s highest ice core and highest automatic weather stations.

University of Maine announces fall 2021 Dean’s List


The University of Maine recognized 3,101 students for achieving Dean’s List honors in the fall 2021 semester. Of the students who made the Dean’s List, 2,024 are from Maine, 1,009 are from 39 other states and 68 are from 25 countries other than the U.S.

To be eligible for the Full-time Dean’s List, a student must have completed 12 or more calculable credits in the semester and have earned a 3.50 or higher semester GPA. Students who have part-time status during both the fall and spring semesters of a given academic year are eligible for Part-time Dean’s List. They must have completed 12 or more calculable credits over both terms and have earned a combined GPA in those terms of 3.50 or higher. Also available is a breakdown of the Dean’s List by Maine counties.

CUGR names 2022–2024 Research Faculty Fellows

 The University of Maine’s Center for Undergraduate Research (CUGR) has named the 2022–2024 Research Faculty Fellows.

CUGR Research Faculty Fellows are a cohort of faculty members who were nominated by their respective deans and selected by the center. The program is designed to support faculty efforts toward improving undergraduate research mentoring skills, expanding curricula to include research and scholarship experiences, and developing proposals for additional funding, specifically for undergraduate students.
