6:27pm Update: According to Rockland Fire Department, Knox Regional Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting smoke and fire in an upstairs apartment on Fulton Street. Fire arriving units reported smoke showing from a second floor window and began the task of stretching a hoseline and attacking the fire. Thankfully all occupants of the fire apartment were out and accounted for. With the fire in check, crews began to check for extension of the fire and also made sure the rest of the building had been evacuated.
Fire damage was contained to the room or origin and the rest of the apartment sustained minimal water and smoke damage. Approximately 150 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.
Any factors contributing to, or hindering the success of the operation:
1. Quick notification to The Knox County Regional Communications Center helped prevent the spread of fire to other apartments.
2. A quick response by Rockland Fire & EMS and our mutual aid partners from Camden and Rockport.
3. Staffed fire stations save time, which saves lives and property. Our first due companies were arriving on scene within 6 minutes of being notified of the fire. Water was being applied to the fire within an estimated 8 minutes, which eliminates fire development.
4. When the tenant noticed fire in the apartment she closed the door to the fire room. This action alone prevented fire spread and further damage before the fire departments arrival. Closed doors, even hollow core doors, can keep smoke, heat, and fire in check.
Cause: Smoking materials near combustibles
3:42pm Update: All Rockland units have cleared the scene.
Firefighters did a great job getting the fire under control/put out.
3:02pm Update: Rockport units are clear and returning.
2:51pm Update: Camden Ladder is returning by command.
