Head on Crash closes Rt 17 by Chickawauki Pond, RD Reopened

Saturday UPDATE: According to Rockland Fire Department, On August 19 at 3:09 p.m., Rockland Police and Fire Departments responded to Rt 17 at Johnson Memorial Park for a collision involving three vehicles.

Victoria Smith, 67, of Hope was travelling southeast, and slowed to make a left turn in to Johnson Memorial Park. Smith was driving a 2011 red Chevrolet Cruise.

Smith’s vehicle was struck from behind by a 1998 silver Toyota Rav 4, operated by Michelle Menting, 42, of Peterborough, NH.

The collision pushed Smith’s vehicle in to the oncoming (northwest bound) travel lane, where Smith’s vehicle collided with a 2003 grey Toyota Camry, driven by Shirley Meyer, 66, of Warren. Meyer’s vehicle went off the road at Johnson Memorial Park, and glanced off a utility pole.
Menting’s and Meyer’s vehicles sustained serious damage. Smith’s vehicle was totaled. Several of the people involved suffered minor injuries; the use of seatbelts and airbags contributed to the injuries being minor.
The crash is still under investigation by Officer Scott Solorzano. No charges have been filed at this time.

Rockland, Maine- Police and fire responding to head on crash on Rt 17 by Chickawauki Pond.

Reporting heavy damage and three vehicles involved with injuries.

UPDATE: Units from Rockland, Thomaston and S. Thomaston have responded and have notified Pen Bay Hospital to expect 4 patients.

UPDATE: Rt 17 is open again, Of the four taken to the hospital, only had moderate injuries.
