Shakespeare Day at the Strand to include Free Vacation Week Programs

ROCKLAND, Maine -  The Strand Theatre, 345 Main Street, announces Shakespeare Day on Wednesday, February 17, during February School Vacation Week.  Presented by the Barn Arts Collective, the day includes free programs for children as well as an evening stage production for all ages.

Shakespeare Is My Hero, presented at 11 am, is an interactive performance event with music, dancing and disguises, showcasing the world's greatest playwright. The show uses costumes, songs and help from the audience to introduce Shakespeare and his work to the next generation of readers, theater-makers and playgoers.  It features text from Macbeth, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Hamlet as well as original music, a slew of Shakespearean insults and a dance party at the end of the show. The show lasts forty-five minutes and is ideal for children ages of 4 -11. Free Admission.

Shakespeare and Stage Combat, presented at 2pm, is a theater workshop that explores Shakespeare’s
verse and characters by focusing on the body and breath. The hour-long workshop investigates the rhythm and language of selected fight scenes from Romeo and Juliet to consider the connection between the text and the body in performance.  Workshop participants will learn techniques for breath support, rhythm and stress, as well as safe, hand-to-hand stage combat maneuvers. The workshop is appropriate for ages 12 - 18, and is  limited to twenty participants. Free Admission but registration is required at info@rocklandstrand.com or 207-701-5053.

12th Night! is a new production of Shakespeare’s classic comedy, reimagined for a modern audience. This family-friendly performance brings the story and characters to life with energy and creativity as four actors play thirteen roles in a 90-minute production.  The show features countless quick changes, original music, a pirate, a pop star, several dance parties and one big practical joke. 12th Night! played to packed houses at The Barn in Bass Harbor on Mount Desert Island during its premiere in August. It plays in Rockland for one night only.

The Barn Arts Collective (formerly the Mohawk Arts Collective) is a group of artists that create and encourage community through the practice and presentation of live arts events.
