WestConn Overpowers Southern Maine 25-5

GORHAM, Maine – The Western Connecticut State University Wolves defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 25-5 on Friday evening in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse contest. Tyler Starrett had six goals and an assist for the

Wolves and Julian Duque scored four goals and had two assists. Kyle Cinotti also had a hat trick for the Wolves.
 
Freshman Rodrigo Araujo (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston), freshman Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) and junior James Kastrinakis (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) each recorded two points for the Huskies. Araujo assisted on two goals, Kastrinakis scored twice, and Smith had a goal and an assist.
 
Jake Kelly earned the win for the Wolves with five saves and five goals allowed.

How It Happened:

  • Duque powered the Wolves to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter with three goals and two assists in the quarter. Starrett scored twice and the Wolves also had goals from Michael Mrzyglod, Peter Traina and Sam Rosa.
  • The Wolves outscored the Huskies 10-2 in the second quarter to take a 19-2 lead at the half. Junior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) scored an up goal for the Huskies and junior Nolan Brennan (Windham, Maine) also had a goal.
  • Each side scored three goals in the third quarter. Smith scored the first six minutes into the new half before the Wolves went on a 3-0 run with tallies by Cinotti, Kai Bruneau and Evan Salen. Kastrinakis scored twice in the span of 39 seconds in the final two minutes with Araujo assisting on his first goal and Smith on his second.
  • WestConn closed out the game with two goals by Cinotti and one by Nicholas Saragossi.

 
Inside The Stats:

  • Jon Russack-Baker went 15-for-19 on faceoffs for the Wolves with 13 ground balls while Nolan Michalowski finished 12-for-14 with seven ground balls.
  • Sophomore Lucas Rego (Dracut, Mass./Lowell Catholic) led the Huskies with five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
  • WestConn led 48-11 in shots on goal.
  • WestConn was 2-for-6 with a man-up and the Huskies went 1-for-4.
