Michaud Nets OT Winner, Grogan Makes 23 Saves in Win Over Bates

STANDISH, Maine – Junior forward Madison Michaud (Presque Isle, Maine) scored off a Kaylee Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) corner kick with 1:39 left in the second overtime period to propel Saint Joseph's College (6-4-0) past Bates College (1-3-2), 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Despite not having any luck with jump balls on

set pieces, Mattos launched a perfect corner kick from the right side to the middle of the box, where Michaud was able to gain separation and one-timed a header into the top left corner of the net for her fourth game-winner and 10th goal overall this season.

Bates dominated possession for the better part of the contest, especially in the first half when the Bobcats outshot the Monks by a 33-9 margin, including a 21-4 advantage in shots on goal. But an epic performance by SJC senior keeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine), who tied a career-high with 23 saves in the victory, kept the hosts within striking distance until they were able to punch home the winner in the 99th minute.

As the game played out, Grogan's biggest stop occurred in the 18th minute, when the senior netminder stonewalled a PK attempt by junior midfielder Cece Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.), who aimed for the bottom right corner and was denied with a diving grab.

TEAM STATS:

Bates held sizeable advantages in shots (35-10), shots on goal (23-5), and corner kicks (13-4) in the losing effort.

THE KEEPERS:

Grogan made 15 saves in the first quarter alone with 23 overall to post her third clean sheet this fall and 12th of her NCAA career. Bates freshman netminder Ruby Reimann (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) turned away four shots on the afternoon.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

For the Monks, today's win over Bates College was the first versus the Bobcats in nine meetings. These two teams last met on September 2nd, 2014 when Bates topped St. Joe's by a 2-0 score in Lewiston.

Today's victory over Bates was also the first win over a NESCAC program in the history of SJC women's soccer.
