Dellolacono Sets Career-Highs in First Match, Lindsay Triple-Doubles in Second

HENNIKER, NH – The University of Southern Maine women’s volleyball team suffered two setbacks on Saturday afternoon, the first a five-set heartbreaker to Lasell University and the second, a four-set match to host New England College. The losses send the Huskies to 2-5 overall while the Lasers and Pilgrims improve to 1-2 and 4-2 respectively.
In the first match, sophomore outside hitter
Brianna Dellolacono (Moodus, CT) set new personal highs with 14 kills and 21 digs for the double-double. Teammate, senior setter Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, CA) recorded a game-one double-double of her own but followed that up with a triple-double, 12 kills, 18 assists, and 18 digs during the second match.

Game One Score: Lasers 3, Huskies 2 (25-16, 21-25, 17-25, 25-13, 10-15)
Game One History: This was the fifth meeting between the two programs. The Huskies are 4-1 against the Lasers in the series.
Standout Husky: Brianna Dellolacono 14 kills, 21 digs, double-double, two aces, one assist.
Game One Standout Laser: Sabine Milton, game-high 18 kills, .317 hitting%, 10 digs, double-double, two blocks, two aces.
How It Happened, Game One:
-The Huskies trailed 3-0 early and 6-4 to Lasell thanks to a bad set. USM responded with a 13-1 scoring spurt to take a commanding 17-7 advantage. Most of the damage was done due to three service aces, two by freshman setter Phoebe Slovenski (Cape Neddick, ME) and one off the serve of Dellolacono. Back-to-back kills by Lindsay and freshman middle hitter Madison Zimmer (Regina, SK, Canada) concluded the outburst. Lasell could muster only nine more points as the Huskies took the opening set 25-16.
-In the second set the Huskies started strong leading 3-0 before their counterparts deadlocked the margin at four all. USM countered outscoring their opponent 8-2 over the next couple of serves to double up the Lasers 12-6. A freshman Lydia Budroe (Windham, ME) kill gave the Huskies their biggest edge of the set at 16-8, but Lasell kept after it stringing together six in a row capped off by a Milton kill at the right pin. Southern Maine hoped to stop the momentum with a timeout, but Mckenna McCool bashed back-to-back kills to regain the advantage towards Lasell at 18-17. USM evened the set once, but the Lasers pulled away late to make it a 1-1 match.
-Lasell got off to a fast start in the all-important third set leading 4-0 before the Huskies tied it up at 4-4. The back and forth nature of the set continued until Southern Maine led 11-10 off a Lindsay kill. Five in a row by Lasell made USM take their first timeout as they were behind 15-11. The Huskies brought their deficit to three, 19-16 however Lasell outproduced the Huskies 6-1 to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.
-The fourth set saw Dellolacono perfectly place an ace in between a few players to move USM ahead 10-3. Southern Maine kept piling on points as a free ball kill by Dellolacono on the left pin upped the score to 18-7. After the kill, Lasell dumped home four straight points bringing their deficit down to seven, 18-11. USM stayed the course and put Lasell away forcing the deciding fifth set.
-Two kills via Dellolacono brought it to a 3-3 and 4-4 contest. Zimmer gave USM the brief advantage at 5-4 until a Milton service error tied the game up at 6-6. Tori Scambray put her team ahead 10-8 with tip right over the Husky block on the left side. Scambray’s kill was the start of four straight markers to move the Lasers ahead 13-8. Southern Maine got two back, but Lasell won the deciding game 15-10.

-Southern Maine hit .313 in the crunch time fifth set, their highest percentage of the game.
-Southern Maine tallied a team-best 15 kills in the fourth set down 2-1 in the match.
-Both programs had five players apiece record double-digit digs.

Game Two History: This is the third meeting between the two programs. The Pilgrims lead the Huskies 2-1 in the series.

How It Happened, Game Two:
-The Huskies started fast jumping to an early 4-0 lead until NEC strung together seven straight points to lead 7-5 due to a Tatiana Sampson kill. Both sides swapped points back and forth then the Huskies snagged an 18-14 edge in the set following a Phoebe Slovenski ace. A Sophie Lindsay kill accounted for the last Husky point of the set as the Pilgrims put together the final nine points to win the opening set 25-19.
-In the second set a McKenzie Kirk block doubled up the Huskies 10-5. Trailing by three, the Huskies put up five straight markers to lead 20-18 off back-to-back miscues by the hosts. A freshman outside hitter Alizia Lagando (Huron, OH) kill kept USM in front 22-21 until the Pilgrims responded with the final four points to take a commanding 3-0 match edge.
-Behind 7-6, USM’s offense broke out using an 8-1 scoring binge which concluded when Lindsay dropped a kill onto the open spot of the hardwood to lead 14-8. A dual block by Lagando and freshman right side Isabella Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) forced NEC into their first timeout of the set. The closest the Pilgrims would cut their margin to was three, 21-18 off consecutive kills by Nyah Piper. Lindsay gave her squad the third set dub when she skied up for a solo block of Shirita Wimberly and converted an attack attempt for the 25th point.
-Lindsay jumpstarted the fourth set with an ace for the opening point for USM. NEC built up a six-score lead 14-8 off a dual block by Kirk and Sampson. The Huskies trimmed the Pilgrims lead to two, 14-12, and keep within three points over the next few serves. At 20-17, NEC put up the next three markers using two kills and a Husky attack error to move ahead 23-17. NEC eventually won the match with the final kill.
Inside The Box Score, Game Two:
-NEC had 18 more attack attempts and 24 more kills than USM.
-NEC had two players with over 15+ assists
-Southern Maine had the better serve/receive as they had six aces, three service errors and five receptions errors compared to their opponents five aces, 13 service errors, and six reception errors.
Up Next: The navy and gold remain on the road for the third straight contest as they ship off to Boston to take on the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday, September 15th at 7:00 p.m.
