BANGOR, Maine -
The Husson University baseball team (10-8) split their home
doubleheader with Colby-Sawyer (7-7) on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles
won the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 7-2 and lost the
second 1-8.
Game 1: Husson 7, Colby-Sawyer 2
Logan Rogerson set the tone for the Eagles' offense in the bottom of the first with a single through the right side. Mike Wong, the next batter, reached on a single of his own. Ryan Rebar and Sam Huston would both follow with RBI singles. Rogerson and Wong scoring on the base knocks. Christian Corneil, Alex Chapman, and Conor Maguire
all followed with well earned walks. Chapman's walked forced home
Rebar, while Maguire's walked pushed Huston across home plate. Cam Archer
picked up an RBI on a groundout to first base. Chapman came around to
score on another bases loaded walk extending the Husson lead to 6-0
after the 1st inning.
Luke Covey, with a swinging bunt down the third base line, drove home Christian Corneil
from third. Corneil had doubled and advanced to third on a pass ball
earlier in the inning. The Eagles held a 7-0 after two innings.
In the top of the 6th inning, Colby-Sawyer got a few
of the runs back. Nathan Frongillo started the inning with a double to
deep left field. Justin Devoid reached second base on an error by Mike Wong.
Frongillo could only advance to third on the miscue. Tim Unczur drove
in both of the Chargers' base runners with a single up the middle.
Colby-Sawyer trailed 7-2 after the 6th inning and would get no closer.
Husson held the 7-2 lead to win the first game of the doubleheader.
Ben Walls (4-0) went 6.0 innings, giving up two runs (one earned), and striking out one. Logan Rogerson, Christian Corneil, and Luke Covey led the way with two hits each. Seven Eagle batters recorded an RBI in the win.
Chris Mitchell Jr. (3-1) picked up the loss by only
going 0.2 innings and giving up six earned runs. Jake Greeney threw 5.1
innings for Colby-Sawyer. He gave up one run and struck out four. Tim
Unczur had the two Charger RBI. Justin Devoid, Doug Avellino, and Nathan
Frongillo each chipped in one hit in the loss.
Game 2: Husson 1, Colby-Sawyer 8
Colby-Sawyer quickly jumped into the lead in Game 2.
They scored two runs in the top of the first in thanks to three infield
singles. Doug Avellino, Nathan Frongillo, and Justin Devoid all,
respectively, had one of those singles. Brendan Thurber came up with the
bases loaded and ripped a ball into left center. Two runners came
around to score giving the Chargers a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Tommy Burns
found himself in more trouble in the top of the 2nd inning. Unczur,
Avellino, and Fenuccio all found themselves on the base paths once
again. Each runner had singled to reach base. Frongillo, on the first
pitch he saw, launched a ball to deep left that settled at the fence.
All three runners came around to score, and Frongillo ended up on third
with a triple. Devoid lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored
Frongillo from third. Colby-Sawyer held a commanding 6-0 lead after two
innings.
The top of the 4th inning started with a bang. Unczur
hit a very deep homerun to left field. Frongillo continued his hot
streak with a double to the left center gap. He would come around to
score on a fielder's choice. The Chargers held a 8-1 lead after four
innings of play. Colby-Sawyer would hold onto the 8-1 lead to split the
doubleheader.
Tommy Burns (2-2) got tabbed with the loss. He went 3.1 innings giving up eight earned runs. Ryan Rebar had the lone Eagle RBI. Cam Archer and Christian Corneil chipped in three combined hits in the loss.
Michael Fazio (1-1) went the distance for
Colby-Sawyer. He gave up one run and struck out five. Nathan Frongillo
and Brendan Thurber each had three RBI in the win. Justin Devoid and Tim
Unczur each had one RBI in the win.
