Opera Preview: La Donna del Lago
The Bagaduce Music Lending Library and Friends of the Blue Hill Public Library will present a preview of Gioachino Rossini's opera, La Donna del Lago at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 13th, at the Blue Hill Public Library. A live performance of the opera will be simulcast at the Grand in Ellsworth the following day, Saturday, March 14th, from the Metropolitan Opera in New York."Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez join forces for this Rossini showcase of bel canto virtuosity, set in the medieval Scottish highlands. DiDonato is the “lady of the lake” of the title, and Flórez is the king who relentlessly pursues her, with their vocal fireworks embellishing the tragic plot. This Met premiere production is directed by Paul Curran and conducted by Michelel Mariotti."
Local opera enthusiasts Linda Lesko and David Porter will summarize the plot, introduce the music and offer some ideas of special ways to enjoy the Saturday simulcast. All are welcome, no previous opera knowledge is needed, and admission is free. For more information, call the library at 374-5515.
Paper Airplane Workshop Series
The Blue Hill Public Library will offer a series of three paper airplane workshops for kids ages 9 to 13, on Saturdays, March 14th, 21st, and 28th from 10:30 AM to noon. Brooklin resident John Brooks will share his love of paper airplanes and aeronautics during this unique workshop series. According to John, paper planes are a fun way to encourage learning, they are relatively easy and inexpensive to make, and at the same time they can be surprisingly sophisticated. In this series of workshops, kids will be introduced to the principles of flight and the design process. They will each design a prototype airplane for low carbon flight, working from pre-printed sets of parts that can be mixed and matched to create new airplanes. John will guide participants through the various choices for making more efficient airplanes based on their individual ideas.
They will also learn the process of revising their designs, and their planes will be tested against models for modern long range, efficient airliners like the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A-350.
This workshop is made possible by the Friends of the Blue Hill Public Library, the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, Cornerstones of Science and the National Science Foundation. It is free but registration is required for all three workshops together. Participants may register using the Library’s interactive web calendar at www.bhpl.net, or call the library at 374-5515.
