Author Roger C. Taylor will present “L. Francis Herreshoff: Yacht Designer” at the Camden Public Library at 7:00 pm. Taylor was the founder of International Marine Publishing of Rockport; his book on Herreshoff chronicles the life and work of the most remarkable yacht designer of his time.

Friday, December 4

Christmas-by-the-Sea Opening Ceremonies at the Camden Public Library, 4:30-6:00 pm, featuring CHRHS vocal groups and instrumental ensembles performing seasonal selections.

Saturday, December 5

Santa arrives by boat at Camden Harbor at 12:00 noon and goes to the Camden Public Library for Santa’s Story Hour. There will be opportunities for photographs with Santa following the story hour.

Simply Books monthly meeting at the Camden Public Library, 2:00 pm. Simply Books is a book group designed for book lovers, all are welcome.

Ho Ho Holiday Book Fair with children’s book authors and illustrators, 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Camden Public Library, co-hosted by the Library and Sherman’s Books. The Fair is part of Camden’s Christmas-by-the-Sea Weekend. The book fair will feature authors and illustrators Chris Van Dusen, Ronni Arno, Susan Hood, Wendy Ulmer, Sandy Crabtree, Russ Cox, Cathryn Falwell, Licia Morelli, Douglas Coffin, Sarah Thompson, G.A. The Camden library will once again exhibit the work of the artist team Clarity, Robert & Su.Sane Hake, during the month of December. This year’s show, entitled “Mother Tongue,” is a show “filled with beautiful mystical images and mythic beings, called the Mer Divinities, as well as the Herbal Tincture Fey that enter our time of Christmas,” say the artists.

Heidi Karod will present a slide talk on her recent trip to Peru, where she volunteered with CANAT (Center for Child and Adolescent Workers), 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. Karod travels with her violin to help draw attention to CANAT and encourage children to enroll. She will also talk about playing her violin in the Peruvian federal prisons, psychiatry hospitals, a fishing village, and a school in a remote farming community.

You Can Be A Part of Maine Filmmaker Doug Mills Latest Film "Race The Wind"

Maine Filmmaker Doug Mills announces the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds needed to release his newest film “Race the Wind” in the spring of 2016. This film is the second in the WINDJAMMER documentary series and was filmed over the last three years with Maine’s historic windjammer fleet.

Imagine if you could know ahead of time the important moments of history and be there to photograph that moment. So many historic moments have gone by unrecognized by those present and only later realized the significance of that very moment.

The second in the “Windjammer” series “Race The Wind” is a documentary film capturing the history along with the grace and beauty of the Maine windjammer, many of witch are over 100 years old as they sail in the Great Schooner Race, hailed as "the largest annual gathering of traditional schooners in America,"
Contributing to the Great Schooner Race’s quirkiness, it is one of the only sailing events in the world that requires no prior sailing experience on the part of the participants!  Every summer since 1977, the Maine Windjammer Association has hosted the Great Schooner Race, providing an opportunity for captains, crews and passengers aboard traditional vessels from all over the Eastern Seaboard
to rendezvous for a fun day of racing some of the most historic vessels in America. The history of racing these magnificent wooden coasting schooners started over a century ago with sailors trying to beat their competitors
to market. The first boat back to port always got the best price for their cargo— perhaps fish, lumber, granite or even Christmas trees. The "Race" was always unspoken, but ever present.

The golden age of sail is long gone, but, on the coast of Maine the golden age of the Maine windjammer is at its height. There was a time when sail was king on the coast of Maine. The lime trade, granite & marble, lumber
from virgin forests, ice and the fishing trades all employed sailing craft to move their products. The lime trade alone employed over 200 two masted schooners in Rockland and the surrounding coastal Maine towns. Steam powered vessels were making some of the longer trans-Atlantic runs and the passenger trade up and down the coast. However, for coastal trade and the hundreds of islands located just off the coast of Maine sail is still king.  On any given day, the coastal waters would be filled with these two masted schooners delivering cargo to and
from all the coastal towns. They are the lifeline for those living on the islands, delivering everything from lumber to butter and even your grandfather’s new Sunday suit. Today only a handful of the sailing vessels remain. Many of them were simply used until they were worn out and replaced by a new one. During the Great Depression, thousands of these boats were just abandoned where they stood and left to rot. There is, however, a place where during the summer and fall you can still see these historic vessels sailing the clear blue waters the Atlantic much the way they have for the past 200 years. Penobscot Bay is located on the coast of Maine and on any given day in the summer you may be able to see as many as 15 or more of these proud sailing vessels, known as windjammers. Many of these boats have been sailing for over 100 years! They are truly living history.  A 2016 release is expected and you are invited to be a part of it.

All those who contribute to the campaign at least $10 will have their names in the final credits of the film and those who contribute more will also receive some great “Race the Wind” CD:s Tee shirts and one of a kind art from the film!

Doug Mills is Photographer and Curator of The Maine Windjammer Project one of the largest collections of nautical photographs centered around the historic fleet of two and three masted schooners, which sail the Maine waters. Started in 2007 The Maine Windjammer Project is an ongoing project to document the modern history of the historic windjammers on the coast of Maine. Many of these boats are over 100 years old two are over 142 years, launched in 1871.
This unique photographic history covers from 2007 to the present, sailing, haul out and the special events, such as The Great Schooner Race 2010 to present. This extensive archive is available to maritime and American history museums and those doing research on these last surviving boats.

Out of the Maine Windjammer Project has grown WINDJAMMER PICTURES to create a series of documentaries:
“Windjammer” Finished in 2014 presents the history and tradition of the Maine Windjammer narrated by long time schooner captain Jim Sharp.
“Race The Wind” in production expected to be finished in 2016, gives a taste of the thrill of sailing these historic ships.
“Sail Into The Future” filming now, explores the preservation and the future of the Maine Windjammer.

Bindi Irwin & Derek Hough Wins Dancing With Stars Season Twenty One

Los Angeles, California - The delightful seventeen year old Conservationist Bindi Irwin won the mirror ball during the two night finale of 'Dancing With The Stars' on Monday, November 23rd and Tuesday, November 24th with her professional dance partner Derek Hough.

Bindi danced to a perfect tune of 60 points for her two dances on Monday night and 30 points for the final dance on Tuesday night.

Bindi tweeted after the finale, "I am speechless. I can't tell you how much love I have for all of your support throughout this beautiful journey."

MPBN Announces 2016 Basketball Tournament Coverage Agreement

City of Portland Reminds Residents of Winter Storm Operations Information

Public Works crews prepare for season

Portland, Maine - Despite the warmer than usual November temperatures, the City would like to remind residents of winter storm operations information as we head into Thanksgiving week. The Department of Public Works is gearing up for the winter season, in which they care for more than 560 lane miles of road and more than 100 miles of sidewalks during and following snow storms.

During the winter months, the Public Works Dispatch office is open 24 hours a day, reachable at 207-874-8493, and crews are assigned to shifts to respond 24/7 to weather events. Major arterial roadways, hills and intersections are often treated before plowing operations begin, usually when 2” of snow falls. Plow teams concentrate first on major roadways and connectors to move traffic along before heading into residential areas.

WINTER STORM REMINDERS

The city reminds residents and business owners of the following during a snow storm:

            ALERTS & PARKING BAN NOTIFICATIONS
Residents and visitors can view alerts on the City’s website at www.portlandmaine.gov or sign up to receive email and text message notices when a city-wide parking ban is declared via the new Notify Me feature. People can also get parking ban updates by following city news on Twitter or Facebook. Motorists can also call the parking ban hotline at 207-879-0300 or check the Time and Temperature building sign for up-to-date postings.

CUSTOMER SERVICE HOTLINE
·         For customer service related to winter operations, please call 207-874-8493. This number is operational during winter months 24/7. For sidewalk plowing concerns, please call 207-874-8793.

PARKING
Residents able to park off-street should do so in order to allow crews to remove snow from the streets and emergency vehicles to travel as safely and efficiently as possible.
If parking your car on the street, please park as close to the snowbank/curb as possible. Often people park several feet away from the curb in order to allow passengers to move in and out of the car easily. Parking the car in this manner shortens the width of the street by several feet, making it difficult for Portland snow plows to clear the street safely and emergency vehicles to respond as quickly as possible to a fire or medical emergency. If the street is impassible for an emergency vehicle, the vehicle blocking the street will be towed.

SNOW REMOVAL
·         Commercial property owners are required to remove snow from the sidewalk abutting their property within 12 hours after snow has ceased to fall.

·         All residential property owners are required to remove snow from the sidewalk abutting their property within 24 hours after the City has finished clearing snow from that storm.

·         A minimum of four feet is required to be clear of snow and treated for ice on all public sidewalks and sidewalk access ramps. Snow cannot be pushed or dumped from driveways and parking lots onto public access sidewalks and access ramps.

Members of the community are encouraged to help the Portland Fire Department by keeping their neighborhood fire hydrants clear of snow and ice. Citizens are also encouraged to help Public Works by clearing catch basins and storm drains in front of their homes to help prevent water ponding on their streets and in their driveway openings.

Merryspring to Hold Winter Nature Walk December 12

Camden/Rockport, Maine - Merryspring Nature Center will hold a free tour along its interpretive trail on Saturday, December 12 at 11:00 am.

Families, children, and all community members are invited to this free program to explore the woods in early winter. The tour will stop at many of Merryspring’s interesting natural features, including the spring, the vernal pool, ancient apple trees, and more. Along the way, guests will keep an eye out for winter wildlife and learn a little about Merryspring’s history and unique landscape.

This program is offered free to all. No sign up is necessary.  In the event of inclement weather, the event will be canceled. Snowshoes are optional.
