The CREW Hosts New Haunt in Camden, Maine

Camden, Maine - The CREW, a Camden Hills Regional High School based mentoring program, hosted a haunted house on Halloween night at the Rig, the local high school hang out in downtown Camden.  Trick-or-treaters were lured to the haunt by the heckling of a wicked witch and the sauntering sounds of a saxophone played live by………………  Inside the spooky house the atmosphere was rife with phantoms, monsters, and severed heads eliciting screams that could be heard from the street.  The goal of the haunted house was to bring awareness to the Rig location by engaging in the spirit of a popular community event.  It was the first year for the haunted house and it was a great success bringing many to the front door of the Rig.  The CREW hopes to continue the new tradition annually.

The CREW is a mentoring program at CHRHS where students and adults cultivate positive friendships by connecting and engaging in community based activities and projects in an effort to re-enforce and strengthen core school values. The Rig is a meeting place for young adults (in the 9th-12th grade) that provides opportunity for our local area youth to develop connection - with themselves, with one another and with the community. The Rig is a place of safe exploration for young adults to pursue new ideas, new friendships and new skills. While the school year is winding down, the CREW, Camden Hills mentoring program, is still in full swing. CREW members could be found last Thursday in the foods room at Camden Hills Regional High School. Cathy Ames-Cruz, Residential Living Skills Coordinator at the Community School, volunteered to come teach the CREW how to make candy. The group had a great time making caramel, cashew brittle and peanut butter balls.

Camden, Maine - Looking in the door of the Rig, the local youth run “hang out” in downtown Camden, this week you would have seen a circle of high school students and community members sitting around on couches, bean bags and even the floor. The CREW, the mentoring program at Camden Hills Regional High School, sat around having a rich discussion, answering questions ranging from “What meal would you have tonight if you could have anything” to “If you could ask three people a question with a guaranteed honest response, what would you ask and to whom?” The answers ranged from funny to serious.

 Things soon got a lot rowdier as the CREW broke up into two teams for a Wii tournament. It was The Destroyers vs. Team Wii Wii in bowling, boxing, archery, dancing, and sword fighting.  Much cheering, laughter and squeals of frustration were heard throughout. At the end, it didn’t even matter who won, the points were never even totaled, but one thing was certain: The CREW had an amazing time and gives special thanks to The Rig for graciously hosting this activity.

Rockport, Maine - May 10, 2012 --- The CREW, Camden Hills based mentoring program, headed out to Oakland Park Lanes recently for a little friendly competition. The bowling alley was filled with the sounds of cheering, disappointment and praise as each bowler did their best. Mentors and students worked together to score the game, quickly catching on to the system. One strike and many gutter balls later, the winner had been declared and peace descended on the bowling alley once again.

CREW members also traveled to the Penobscot Bay YMCA for some time in the pool. The group played Marco Polo, sharks and minnows and keep away. Everyone in attendance had a good time.

CREW members vote on activities that they would like to participate in. Upcoming activities include candy making and a Wii tournament at the Rig. We will be starting a new CREW soon. If you are interested in learning more please contact Brystle or Gretchen at 236-7800 x328.

CAMDEN, ME - The mentoring group at Camden Hills Regional High School, The CREW, headed out to the Camden Rockport Animal Rescue League recently. They worked together to help around the shelter. Students and mentors alike raked, cleaned up different areas and socialized the cats. CREW members cleaned up the gardens, raking leaves and pulling dead debris and weeds. They also headed behind the shelter to clean out the dog cages. A few mice and screams later, the kennels were ready.

Inside, litter boxes were cleaned and cats were entertained. Some CREW members used laser pointers and toys to play with the cats, while some just sat and brushed or pet the more relaxed felines.  It was a great chance for CREW members to spend time together and help out a great community organization.
