Free Concert on July 4th to Feature Four Bands At Camden Harbor Park and Amphitheatre

 David Dodson and The Lowdown, featuring John and Rachel Nicolas, will perform at 7:45 p.m. on July 4th during Camden Rotary's Music by the Sea event at Camden Harbor Park and Amphitheatre. Three other bands will provide entertainment from 2 p.m. onward.

Sponsorships will help fund youth programs in the Knox County area

Camden, Maine – June 13, 2014 -- The Camden Rotary Club will bring four live band performances to Camden on July 4th for this year’s Music-by-the-Sea Concert in Camden Harbor Park and Amphitheatre – a major event during the Midcoast Festival of Independence.

An Independence Day tradition since the late 1980s, this free public concert is organized by the Camden Rotary Club and supported by Rotary members, local businesses and individuals.

The Club’s goal is to raise $25,000 from concert sponsorships for its Youth Are the Future Program, a major new effort to support the development and education of youth in the Knox County and Lincolnville area. The Club gratefully acknowledges the following sponsors who have contributed $500 or more to this event so far: Bangor Savings Bank, McNabb Marketing Resources, Camden Hills Dental Care, Elm Street Marketing Essentials, P.G. Willey, Buckingham Financial Designs, P.C., and James and Felicity Bowditch.

These groups will perform from mid-afternoon until just before Camden’s spectacular fireworks celebration:

2:00 pm – 3:15 pm           The Muellers – Maine’s best family bluegrass band

3:30 pm – 4:15 pm           The Midcoast Community Band – Marches, Broadway, and popular tunes

5:00 pm – 6:15 pm           Reina del Cid – A spirited folk rock group from Minneapolis

7:45 pm – 9:00 pm            David Dodson and The Lowdown, featuring John and Rachel Nicolas  –  Camden musician and singer- songwriter David Dodson has shared the stage with some of the nation’s best artists.Camden's spectacular fireworks will follow this performance.

There will be plenty of excitement in downtown Camden right before the concert begins, as antique cars parade along Main Street and arrive on Atlantic Avenue from about 1:00 to 1:30 p.m.

“David Dodson and the Lowdown” April 3

David Dodson and the Lowdown return for another sparkling performance at the Camden Library Coffeehouse on Thursday evening, April 3, at 7:00 pm. The Lowdown consists of David Dodson, John and Rachel Nicholas, and Mike Nickerson, and they offer a great mix of songs and styles from raucous to sentimental and from rock to folk, with a wonderful blend of voices and instruments. Admission is $8 at the door.

The Camden Library Coffeehouse is a traditional coffeehouse format in a cozy setting, held at the library on the first Thursday of the month. David Dodson is a favorite performer at the Coffeehouse. Dodson writes great songs that run the gamut of American styles — folk, rock, blues, jazz and country. They cover a variety of topics and range from poignant to hilarious. He plays a mean guitar, tells a good story, sings like a bird, and he’s got rhythm. Who could ask for anything more?

Dodson has shared the stage with K D Lang, Bill Staines, Ramblin Jack Elliot, Gordon Bok, Dougie MacLean, The Persuasions, Greg Brown, Joe Ely, Marcia Ball, Sha Na Na, Chicago, and the Flying Burrito Brothers. He was a winner of the “New Folk” contest at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

The Midcoast Audubon hosts Dr. Barney Balch on “The Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification: A Brief Introduction,” with a short video, “The Acid Test,” 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. Balch is Senior Research Scientist at the Ocean Observing and Optics Laboratory at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay.

Songwriters Session, 6:30 pm in the second floor meeting room at the Camden Public Library. Camden’s well-known songster David Dodson will lead the session. Bring your latest song and try it out for an appreciative audience. The group will meet once a month through the winter, and perform at the June Songwriters’ Coffeehouse. Panel discussion, “Specifically for Maine Authors” on writing/publishing/getting published, 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library, featuring authors Lynn Fernands (Noble House), Steve Powell (Patch Scratching), and Jane Karker of Maine Authors Publishing in Rockland.

Thursday, March 28

Mark Berry of the Downeast Lakes Land Trust presents the story of community-led conservation of the forest landscape around Grand Lake Stream, Maine, including a 15-minute documentary film with a slide talk and discussion, 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. Learn about conservation of 370,000 acres as a local economic strategy; community forests; wildlife habitat projects; public recreation opportunities; and a sustainable forest economy.

Tuesday, April 2

Exhibit opening and Maritime Month kickoff at the Camden Public Library, 7:00 pm. Dave Jackson, former publisher of The National Fisherman, will present “A Photo History of Our Oldest Industry,” with photos from the National Fisherman collection of the Penobscot Marine Museum. Favorite photos of the fisheries, from the schooners off the Grand Banks to the stern-trawlers on the Alaskan coast.

Midcoast Stroke Support Group meets at 10:00 am at the Camden Public Library. All are welcome.

Thursday, April 4

Camden Library Coffeehouse features Ed Geis & Friends, 7:00 pm. The evening’s music will include a mix of original compositions, western folk tunes, and more. Will Brown and David Foley join Ed Geis to create a dynamic trio playing a host of stringed instruments including guitar, laud, and baritone guitar. Admission is $7.

Songwriters Sessions Kick Off December 27

Library Songwriters Kick Off December 27

The Camden Library Songwriters Sessions will kick off December 27 with an open song circle of songwriters at 6:30 pm. David Dodson will be the session leader that evening, there is no admission charge and an audience is welcome as well as songwriters.

The Songwriters Sessions will continue monthly through the winter. “Bring your latest song and try it out for an appreciative audience,” said Ken Gross, program director at the library. “Get some positive feedback and perhaps even some harmony or instrumental backup to help you out!” The group will meet once a month through the winter, and perform at the June Songwriters’ Coffeehouse. The sessions will be led by veteran songwriters David Dodson and Jim James. The schedule for the songwriters session is the fourth Tuesday of each month, meeting in the second floor History Center from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The dates are January 22, February 26, March 26, April 23, and May 28. The final meeting will be a performance at the Songwriters’ Coffeehouse on Thursday, June 6, at 7:00 pm. Songwriters Circle, 6:30 pm, at the Camden Public Library. Free, informal circle of songs. Bring your latest song and try it out for some positive feedback. Led by veteran songwriter David Dodson. Call the library at 236-3440 for more information.

Coffeehouse June 7 Features Library’s Songwriters

 On Thursday, June 7 at 7:00 pm, the Camden Public Library will feature the new work of the Songwriter’s Sessions. The June Coffeehouse has become a much-anticipated annual tradition at the library. The musicians have been working all winter writing and polishing the performance of their new work. The sessions have been led by veteran songwriters David Dodson and Jim James. James will MC the evening; there is a suggested donation of $4. Call Ken Gross at the library at 236-3440 for more information.

The music ranges from traditional-sounding ballads to humorous ragtime to a capella compositions. The musicians support each with vocals and instrumentation. The series continues a tradition of helping songwriters prepare their work for presentation. Songwriters in the past have found the sessions to be very helpful in providing regular feedback as the songs progress, and have found the monthly meetings to be a great advantage in helping provide the discipline to keep writing. The sessions are also an opportunity to find like-minded musicians to perform with. As one writer put it, “Songwriting is a challenging and sometimes wrenching process, and it is great to have the comments and support of fellow writers. And if others enjoy it and see part of their life story in it as well, that’s a bonus!”
