Rockport, Maine - On Saturday the community and Pen Bay Healthcare dedicated the Sussman House on it's Rockport campus.  Sussman House will provide hospice care in a home-like setting on the Pen Bay Healthcare campus in beautiful Rockport, Maine.

"Sussman House will provide care for people whose symptoms are not well managed at home and are in need of hospice care as they near the end of their life. In addition to caring for terminally ill patients, Sussman House staff will also provide support and hospitality for families who are grieving and want to be with their loved ones during their final days.

Sussman House will provide state of the art pain and symptom management combined with compassionate care, away from the hustle and bustle of a hospital or a rehabilitation facility. The atmosphere will be one of peace and tranquility and the interior design and furnishings will “look like, act like, and feel like home.”

This exciting project will expand the high quality advance care services already provided by Pen Bay Healthcare and Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care & Hospice and will be available to patients and families throughout Midcoast Maine.

Hospice House Groundbreaking

Rockport, Maine - Pen Bay Healthcare and Kno-Wal-Lin breaks ground on a 7 bed hospice house on the Pen Bay Hospital Campus.
"Kno-Wal-Lin Homecare and Hospice, is building a Hospice House in Rockport, Maine.  This exciting project will expand the high quality end of life care services already provided by the Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice Program in Knox, Waldo, and Lincoln Counties, and will be available to patients and families throughout Midcoast Maine.

The Hospice House will provide care for people who are in the final weeks or days of their lives, as well as to patients whose caregivers are in need of respite from taking care of their loved ones who are facing the end of their lives. In addition to caring for terminally ill patients, Hospice House staff will also provide support and hospitality for families who are grieving and want to be with their loved ones during their final days.

The design of the Hospice House is based on a New England Farmstead  with a “Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn” configuration.  The Houses will be connected by glass enclosed passageways surrounding two large courtyards with four-seasons gardens.  The “Big House” is home to the community living room, dining area, kitchen and pantry.  The “Little House” consists of the administrative offices, conference room and workspace for staff.  Our “Back Houses” consist of 7 patient suites, each with a private bath and living area to accommodate family.  A library and sanctuary are also part of the “Back Houses.”  The “Barn” contains the garage, staff lounge, storage and electrical/mechanical rooms.

Pen Bay Healthcare Breaks Ground On New Hospice Facility September 15th

Rockport, Maine - Pen Bay Medical Center will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, September 15th, 2013 at 2 p.m. for Hospice House, a new 10,000 square foot facility on the Pen Bay  route 1 campus that will provide care and state of the art pain and symptom management to people in the final weeks or days of their lives.

The third free-standing house of its kind in the state, Hospice House will serve the communities of Central and Midcoast Maine and will expand the end-of-life care services already provided by the Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice Program in Knox, Waldo, and Lincoln Counties. First conceived of in 2003, the Hospice House project has developed through a collaboration between Pen Bay Healthcare, Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice, and numerous community supporters and donors. The project was approved by a unanimous vote through the Rockport Planning Board on August 14. The planned opening date is targeted for July 2014.

Rockport & Bangor, Maine - Pen Bay Healthcare and Eastern Maine Medical Center are pleased to
announce a collaboration that will bring state-of-the-art treatment and cancer clinical research trials to Midcoast Maine. The partnership gives Pen Bay Medical Center membership in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Program as a satellite of EMMC Cancer Care. This affiliation will allow Pen Bay to participate in breast, colon, and lung cancer trials as designated by the National Cancer Institute.

The Cancer Care Center at Pen Bay Medical Center provides cancer treatment and support, detection and diagnosis, plus a full range of educational and counseling services. The Center is staffed by an on-site, board-certified oncologist, a social worker dedicated to the unique needs of cancer patients and nurses with a special interest in caring for patients with cancer, several of whom have certification in oncology nursing.

The staff's attention to quality has earned national recognition and accreditation by The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer since 1979, one of only 11 programs in the state and the only program in Midcoast Maine. The Center provides educational materials, support groups and coordination of care with radiation services and surgical specialists in Augusta, Bangor, Bath, Portland and Boston.

EMMC Cancer Care has offered clinical trials for more than 35 years. In 2011, the organization was named an at-large cancer research site by the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), a national research group sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. This designation—the only one in Maine—allows EMMC to develop affiliations with cancer centers in the region that want to make clinical trials available to their patients. As of 2011, EMMC had the highest number of patients participating in clinical research studies of any community cancer center affiliated with the CALGB. EMMC is one of only a few community cancer centers in the nation to be named an at-large cancer research site.
