The Science of Character – A Lunchtime Conversation Presented by Portland Public Library’s Choose Civility initiative

March 20th at noon in the Rines Auditorium – bring your own lunch
Portland, Maine - Join Portland Public Library’s Choose Civility team for an 8-minute film, facilitated lunchtime discussion and opportunity for engaging in a national conversation on the topic of Character.

Challenging the conventional belief that people are stuck with the character attributes they are born with, THE SCIENCE OF CHARACTER reveals how it is possible for anyone to build up their core character strengths and use them to achieve greater personal, academic, and professional success and happiness. The film premiere will serve as the centerpiece of #CharacterDay, a 24-hour series of live events and online conversations highlighting the expanding catalog of scientific research proving that positive characteristics like self-control, optimism, and gratitude can be nurtured and developed.

“The Portland Public Library’s Choose Civility Initiative is pleased to join with schools and nonprofits around the world to participate in a film screening and discussion about what we value as “good character” in ourselves and each other. Civility depends on each of us bringing our best self to conversations with others and to participate in public life with respect and integrity” said Kim Simmons, Choose Civility coordinator. “The opportunity to explore the question of what traits we value in people and why and how they connect to Democracy is exciting.”

Bring your lunch and join us for an interactive discussion in Rines Auditorium on March 20th from 12-1pm.
