The Story from Wikipedia
Thomas Novachek is the writer-director of a new play opening in New York City, an adaptation of the 1870 novel Venus in Furs by Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, which inspired the term Masochism. He is on the telephone lamenting the inadequacies of all the actresses who showed up that day to audition for the lead character, Wanda von Dunayev.[ Suddenly, at the last minute, a new actress, Vanda Jordan, bursts in, the exemplar of every fault he has decried: needy, crude, compliant, desperate. She convinces him to read through his play, she as Wanda and he as Severin von Kushemski During this reading, Vanda shows astonishing insights into the novel and her character and the balance of power shifts as the actress establishes total dominance over the director, exactly as in the novel.

Gaslight Theater Auditions for Mrs Packard‏

Hallowell, Maine - Auditions for Gaslight Theater’s first play of 2013, “Mrs. Packard,” will be held at Hallowell City Hall 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Dec. 1 in the City Hall Chambers  and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 4 in the Auditorium .  This will be the first show of our 2013 season
.
The play has roles for four males and five females, ages mid-30’s to 60-years old.  It will be performed. Friday to Saturday, March 22 to March 23, Sunday, March 24 and Thursday to Saturday, March 28 to March 30.  Bruce Hertz of Wayne is the director.

Actors will do cold readings from the script as well as some improvisations and movement exercises.  Loose, comfortable clothing is advised.

“Mrs. Packard” deals seriously with man's inhumanity to women -- more specifically, one husband's inhumanity to his wife.  In 1861, Elizabeth Parsons Ware Packard had the misfortune of differing with her Calvinist preacher spouse's beliefs in church doctrine. At the time, Illinois law held that a husband could commit his wife to an asylum on the grounds of insanity without her consent or having to produce any evidence at a public hearing. So the Reverend Theophilus Packard took the state up on its offer after his wife refused to recant her liberal views of God's intentions. The furious Packard claimed Elizabeth was not just mentally impaired but unable to care for the couple's six children.  This true story, infuriating and inspiring, pits one woman’s struggle to right a system gone wrong.

Questions about the play and the auditions may be directed to Hertz at 685-9930, 458-2201 or bhertz@roadrunner.com.

The Gaslight Theater to Prduce Ken Ludwigs' "The Fox on the Fairway"‏

Hallowell, Maine - The Gaslight Theater to Produce Ken Ludwigs' "The Fox on the Fairway"
A tribute from Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo) to the great English farces of the 1930s and 1940s, The Fox On the Fairway takes audiences on a hilarious romp which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club. It's a charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man's eternal love affair with… golf.

Bingham, president of a prestigious  Country Club, is in a difficult position, less by finding out that his newly hired hand, Justin, is in love with Louise, the waitress at the club house, but by the discovery that the golfer he thought would play for his club has switched sides. He's been recruited by his counterpart and opponent, the cocky and arrogant Dickie, and the huge bet he had foolishly wagered is now likely to be lost.

Fortunately, Bingham discovers that Justin is actually quite a good golfer and finagles his nomination. Justin does not disappoint and has a huge lead, when close to its end the tournament is interrupted by bad weather. Then the romance between Justin and Louise takes a turn for the worse, threatening the outcome of the match.

Bingham is desperate, and the appearance of his wife complicates the matter, as she catches him much too close to Pamela, his sex-starved vice-president.

Can Bingham win the wager, and get his life in order?

Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, Fox on the Fairway is a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers' classics.

Louise ~~~~ Samantha Wilson
