USM Women's Soccer: Allain, Berthiaume & Lynch Named 2021 Huskies’ Women’s Soccer Captains

GORHAM, Maine –  Seniors Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) and Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) and junior Katie Lynch (Bellingham, Mass./Mount St. Charles) have each been named captains of the 2021 University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s soccer team.  Fourth-year head coach Seth Benjamin ’00, the 2018 Little East Conference Coach of the Year, made the announcement as his squad prepares for its season-opening contest on Wednesday, September 1 (4:00 pm) against Thomas College at Hannaford Field in Gorham.

UPDATE: Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge Closures

UPDATE: These closures are now scheduled for the nights of Thursday, August 26th and Wednesday, September 1st. In the event of bad weather, paving would be delayed to the following night.

HANCOCK COUNTY - As the Maine Department of Transportation approaches the end of a summer construction project on the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge, the paving contractor has requested several full closures of the bridge to ensure the safety of workers. MaineDOT is accommodating this request and closing the bridge for two four-hour periods next week: from 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18th to 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 19th and from 9:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19th to 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 20th. Emergency vehicles will still be allowed to use the bridge during these times. We expect one more full bridge closure in the coming weeks and will issue another press release when we have more details. Paving work accomplished during these bridge closures will help move this project closer to full completion and ensure the safety of our crews and contracting partners while this important work is being done.

MaineDOT thanks the members of the traveling public for their continued patience and understanding during the length of this project.

Governor Mills and Commissioner Beal Pledge to Assist Maine Organic Dairy Farms In Wake Of Danone Decision to Not Renew Milk Contracts with 14 Maine Farms

The Mills Administration unveiled today a fiscal recovery program to distribute $119.2 million in Federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) to local governments across Maine. Maine DHHS Seeks Comments by August 27 on HCBS Bonus Initiative

The Department’s Initial Plan under Section 9817 of the American Rescue Plan Act (the HCBS FMAP provision) allocates up to $126 million in bonuses to new and existing HCBS Direct Support Workers (DSWs) and their Immediate Supervisors.  The Department has drafted guidance for HCBS provider agencies that explains who is eligible for the bonuses, the amount and timing of the bonuses, the amount that Provider Agencies may claim for related expenses, and the responsibilities of Provider Agencies in paying the bonuses.


The Department is seeking comments on this draft bonus guidance.  Please submit your comments to HCBS-FMAP.DHHS@maine.gov  by 5:00 p.m. on August 27.  Note that the policy described in this guidance is subject to approval by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and may change.

Road Closure and Detour in Taunton & Raynham Academy Grant

SOMERSET COUNTY - Central Maine Quebec Railroad will be closing Routes 6 and 15 in Taunton & Raynham Academy Grant next week to accommodate work on a railroad crossing. The Maine Department of Transportation will be assisting with the closure and detour. The road will be closed to traffic from 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25th until the morning of Thursday, August 26th. This road closure creates a substantial detour, using Routes 201 and 16. MaineDOT will use digital message signs to alert drivers. We want to thank the members of the traveling public for their patience and understanding while we complete this important work.

Culvert Work on Route 1 in Woolwich

WOOLWICH - The Maine Department of Transportation will be performing rehabilitation work on a large culvert on Route 1 in Woolwich. Work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 18th. The culvert is located 0.19 of a mile northeast of Shaw Road. Two-way traffic will be maintained during this work. The contractor on this project is C.L.H. & Son of Auburn. We anticipate this work will be finished by September 17th.

Intersection Improvements in Pownal

POWNAL - The Maine Department of Transportation is making improvements to the intersection of Hallowell Road (Route 9), Pownal Road, and Elmwood Road in Pownal. This work will involve sporadic lane closures. The contractor on this project is Pratt & Sons of Mechanic Falls. The contract amount is $127,980. We expect all work to be finished by the end of November.

Intersection Improvements in Wiscasset

 WISCASSET - The Maine Department of Transportation is making improvements to three intersections along Route 1 in Wiscasset. This work will improve safety and traffic flow. The project areas are at the intersections of Route 1 and Old Ferry Road (Route 144), Old Bath Road, and Birch Point Road. Two-way traffic will be maintained during daytime hours. The contractor on this project is Pratt & Sons of Mechanic Falls. The contract amount is $1,937,245. Our anticipated completion date for this work is October 21st.

Stillwater Ave. road work for the week of 8-15-21

Bangor, Maine - Stillwater Ave.  paving will continue starting Sunday Evening from 7pm to 7am for the week of 8-15-21.


Avoid this area if possible as there will be delays. Watch for lane closures and follow all signage and flagger instructions.

Commissioner Beal Praises Maine Forest Service Firefighters and Support Personnel Assisting with Western Wildfires

Bangor, Maine - Bangor Water District will be working on Hancock St. from Washington St. to Oak St. in front of U-Haul for water repairs.


The road will be down to one lane with flagger in place to guide traffic. Avoid this area if possible as there could be some delays.

I-95 Ramp Closures for Tonight 8-16-21

New Traffic Pattern in Edgecomb

UPDATE: The beginning date of the closure has changed from August 16th to August 23rd.

EDGECOMB - The Maine Department of Transportation wants members of the traveling public to be aware of changing traffic patterns at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 27 (Boothbay Road) in Edgecomb. Beginning today, northbound Route 27 traffic will be detoured to Cross Road in order to access Route 1. We expect this detour to be in place until early September.

We continue to ask members of the traveling public to be patient and extremely careful when navigating this intersection. The contractor on this project is Sargent Corporation of Old Town. The contract amount is $2,346,703. The project is still scheduled to be finished by mid-October.

Appropriations Committee Passes Energy & Water Funding Bill, Includes Major Wins for Maine Championed by Senator Collins

WASHINGTON — Maine’s congressional delegation urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today to take action to preserve the state’s 207 area code. Absent measures from the FCC, available 207 area code phone numbers are projected to run out in 2024, leading to the creation of a second area code for the state. Mainers often leave out their area code when relaying a phone number, so the addition of a second area code could cause headaches throughout the state and force many businesses and organizations to replace promotional and informational materials.

AUGUSTA, MAINE - The Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) reminds residents and tourists of the dangers posed by extreme heat. The National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Caribou">https://www.weather.gov/car/" and Gray">https://www.weather.gov/gyx/" report a multi-day stretch of hot and humid conditions is expected with a heat index in the mid-90s to near 100 in some areas. AUGUSTA, August 11, 2021 — Ground-level ozone concentrations will be climbing in Maine on Thursday and are expected to reach unhealthy levels for the Southwest Coast and the high elevations of Acadia NP according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  Ozone levels in southern New England began ramping up on Wednesday with transport of ozone and its precursors toward Maine later today and tomorrow.  Meanwhile, some smoke is expected to combine with regional particle pollution to push particle pollution to moderate levels statewide tomorrow.

$2.5 Million Requested by Senator Collins for Naval Support Activity Cutler Firehouse Passes Appropriations Committee

Senator Collins submitted a Congressionally Directed Spending request in the FY22 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill


Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, announced that $2.5 million in funding she requested for the construction and relocation of a new Naval Support Activity (NSA) Cutler Firehouse was included in the Fiscal Year 2022 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill.  The bill was passed by the Appropriations Committee by a vote of 25-5 and will now be considered by the full Senate.
