Volunteers Needed in Medical, Kid’s Fun Run and Parking for Aug. 4 TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine – Volunteers are still needed in the medical tent and other locations throughout Cape Elizabeth for this year’s special 15th running of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race on August 4.

“We especially need physicians and nurses,” said Volunteer Coordinator Maya Cohen of Cape Elizabeth. “But we also need volunteers in parking, transportation and on Friday evening, the Kid’s Fun Run.”

New and returning volunteers are encouraged to sign up soon at http://www.beach2beacon.org/VOLUNTEER to have access to the widest selection of openings.

Volunteers receive a commemorative tech T-shirt and are invited to a party in a coastal Cape Elizabeth locale, organized exclusively for them.

The TD Beach to Beacon 10K needs more than 800 volunteers in total each year to ensure a smooth operation and help create the safe, festive atmosphere that makes the event so special for recreational runners and elite athletes alike.

In addition to parking and water stations, volunteers help organize and staff many aspects of the event, including registration for two days prior to the race, course set up and break down, baggage assistance, recycling and in the medical tent.

This year marks the special 15th running of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, which filled in 10 minutes and is considered one of the gems on the U.S. road race circuit. The race begins near the Crescent Beach State Park entrance on Route 77 and ends 6.2 miles later in Fort Williams Park at the Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in America.

A race field of 6,000 is expected, including some of the best elite runners in the world as well as in Maine and New England. The 2011 race included runners from 12 countries and 43 U.S. states.

TD Bank is the title sponsor of the race, founded by Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson, a running icon and Maine’s most admired athlete.

Volunteers Needed at Merryspring for American Chestnut Planting


Camden, Maine - Save the American Chestnut!  Volunteers are needed to help with planting American Chestnut seedlings at Merryspring Nature Center in Camden on Saturday, June 2 at 9 a.m.   Volunteers will be cutting down and stacking three to six chestnut blight-addled trees as well as planting new seedlings grown from Merryspring’s chestnut restoration orchard.

The American Chestnut was once the most abundant and prolific deciduous tree on the East Coast. Its numbers have all but disappeared after an invasive pathogen called Chestnut Blight arrived in North America in the 1920s. Through its partnership with the American Chestnut Foundation, Merryspring has its very own restoration orchard to assist in the effort of creating blight-resistant chestnut seedlings and welcoming this mighty tree back to our landscape.

This will be a big job and will require many extra hands. Volunteers are advised to bring work gloves and water bottles when helping out.  Come play a role in one of the greatest come-back stories ever told.

Volunteers Needed to Help Prepare Campus for Opening Day

SEARSPORT, ME - Penobscot Marine Museum has scheduled Spring Cleanup & Volunteer Day on May 12. Volunteers will spend the day working alongside other friendly, energetic people while helping prepare the museum for the opening of its 2012 exhibit season. Breakfast and lunch will be served, and participants will learn about long-term volunteer positions in many departments.

There will be lots of grounds work: raking, gardening, preparing plantings, and pruning. Other jobs may include painting and paint prep, moving boats and other heavy objects, and light carpentry. For those who prefer indoor work, there will be cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, washing windows and changing light bulbs. Another method of volunteering is to bring a pot-luck lunch selection for our hungry workers.

The event starts with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 4:00 p.m. Please bring work gloves. Also handy may be rakes, pruning shears, brooms, rags, buckets, paint scrapers, wheelbarrows and pickup trucks.

For the second year in a row, members of the Eastern Maine chapter of the Yale Alumni Association will be on hand helping out as part of the Yale Day of Service. Also anticipated is the help of Girl Scout troop 2908 and Cub Scout pack 235 from Stockton Springs.

"It will be a day of good fun and productive work," said Executive Director Liz Lodge. "Folks should come prepared to roll up their sleeves, have fun, and meet others who support one of the area's premier cultural institutions."
