Poetry Month Rockland Poetry Contest 2015

Rockland, Maine - THE ROCKLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY AND POETRY MONTH ROCKLAND announce that the annual Poetry Month Rockland 2015 Poetry Contest is now open for submissions!

Participants are asked to send in an original one page, typed (not required for Child 1 & 2 category), single spaced poem on the theme: “In Air, On Land, At Sea.” Categories for the contest are as follows: Child 1: Pre-K to third grade; Child 2: fourth to seventh grade; Teen: eighth through 12th grades; and Adult: age 19 and beyond. Poems may be submitted between now and April 7th for adults and until April 14th for children and teens. All poems should arrive at the Rockland Public Library at 80 Union Street, Rockland, ME 04841 no later than the above deadlines. There is no fee for the contest, and prizes will be awarded in all three age categories. Poets will be invited to read their winning poems at the Poetry Swarm, to be held at the library on Thursday, April 30 at 6:00 p.m.

Poetry Month Rockland, Rockland Public Library and The Penobscot School present "Bilingual Poetry Night"

Tuesday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the Penobscot School,  28 Gay Street in Rockland. 

Rockland, Maine - Poems will be read in French & Spanish, along with their English translations.  Readers include Penobscot School instructors Nohora Estes & Elizabeth Goodridge (and her husband Peter Conant), as well as Watershed School students from Mariel Dowling’s Spanish Class.

Elisabeth Goodridge has taught French to all ages in Maine and Montreal for 40+ years. She enjoys acting, singing, sailing, artistic expression and French singer-songwriters of the 20th century.

Peter Conant has been a stage actor for many years, performing with several companies including, Belfast Maskers, The Assembled Players and the improvisational group Playing in Traffic.  Peter makes his living as a carpenter in Appleton, Maine.

Nohora Estes, who is a native Colombian, has been associated with Penobscot School for 20+ years, leading children's courses and assisting in the immersions. She established the Spanish program at The Riley School in 1998, where she teaches K-8th grades. Nohora also teaches private Spanish lessons.

The Watershed School is an independent high just located at 32 Washington Street in downtown Camden, Maine.  It was founded in 2002 and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a Maine State Approved High School. The school offers a challenging academic program in Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts. Classes are small, usually less than 10 students, and have a strong focus on instilling effective intellectual habits, leadership and responsibility.  The Spanish instructor is Mariel Dowling,

Call for Place Based Poets

Rockland, Maine - Our natural surroundings have long inspired artistic creation, through visual arts, dance or poetry. In honor of National Poetry Month, this April, the Georges River Land Trust is partnering with the Rockland Public Library for Poetry Month Rockland during their month long celebration of landscapes. Poets of all ages are invited to visit places in the watershed and then craft poems to be shared on Earth Day at the Library.

With the hills, river and coastline of the Georges River watershed in our midst, local poets, children and adults, are invited to pursue their artistic talent while being inspired by these familiar places. Poems may be submitted until April 17th to the Georges River Land Trust, 8 North Main Street, Rockland. The Land Trust will provide a “tool kit” for poets who are interested in practicing their discipline in situ, including poetry guidelines, maps of trails and protected lands.  Here is an opportunity to explore some of the Land Trust’s protected lands, hike the trails of the Georges Highland Path, or find your own special niche in the watershed. On Earth Day, Monday, April 22, poets will reveal their creations at the Placed-Based Poetry event at the Rockland Public Library.
