Don Giovanni , the Mozartean version of the Don Juan legend, has every trick in the human repertoire: love, hate, fear, changed identities, betrayal, ghosts, and finally death. And most of all, it has some of the most gorgeous music ever written.
Don Giovanni, with a libretto by Lorenzo DaPonte and music by Mozart, had its premiere on October 29, 1787, exactly 224 years to the day of its original broadcast last Fall. Imagine Mozart’s surprise at what extraordinary feats technology achieves today.
The title role will be sung by baritone, Mariusz Kwiecien. Three sopranos, Marina Rebeken, as Donna Anna, Barbara Frittoli, as Donna Elvira, and Mojca Erdmann as Zerlina sing the roles of the misused women. Tenor, Ramón Vargas is Don Ottavio who is engaged to Donna Anna; and Luca Pisaroni is Giovanni’s servant, Leporello. The director is Michael Grandage and the conductor is Met Principal Conductor, Fabio Luisi.
