Open Call for Art

Constellation Gallery, a nonprofit art gallery at 511 Congress Street in Portland Maine invites artists from all over the world to submit art to their "Art Without Borders" show which runs from July 26 to August 26th.  This will be the first show in which non-members of the Maine Artists Collective will be allowed to enter work to be adjudicated into a show.  Gallery hours are Monday to Sunday, noon to 4 pm.

Any kind of art (except for sculptures needing pedestals) is being accepted for this show including painting, photography, digital art, printmaking, collage or assemblage. There is no theme for this show and there is no fee.  Artists may submit up to 10 images as jpgs (1,280 pixels on the longest side at 72 dpi, jpg compression level 8). 

The deadline for images emailed to gallery@constellationart.com is July 1st, 2013. Artists will be notified by July 8th and those included in the show are asked to submit images (1,280 pixels on the longest side at 300 dpi, jpg compression level 8) toanntracy51@gmail.com by July 10th. 

Work must be delivered to the gallery no later than July 22nd.  If art is being mailed or sent via UPS or FedEx,  artists must include return postage in a separate envelope or the work will not be returned.

All work must be ready to hang (no saw tooth hangers please) and marked on the back with the artist's name, title of work, type of work and price.  Constellation Gallery will take a 50% commission on any work that is sold.  Artists will receive their checks by the end of September.

CALL FOR ART! SHOW AND TELL GALLERY

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine requests submissions of artwork for its fourth annual Show and Tell Gallery, an art show celebrating the work of children and teens on the autism spectrum. Children ages 5-18 (or grades K-12) living in Maine and diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are encouraged to submit up to 3 pieces of artwork. Flat pieces should measure no more than 36”x36”; also accepting a limited number of 3D works.

Fulbright Alum Helps Islamabad Street Kids Find a Better Future

Jawaid is a four-year-old trash picker. He wants to be a tree when he grows up.

At least, that's what he tells his teacher during an art class sponsored by the LettuceBee Kids project in Islamabad, Pakistan.

"But you are not a tree," the teacher tells him. "If you don't like where you are, you can move."

That's the idea behind the LettuceBee initiative, which helps street kids like Jawaid move beyond a life of begging and trash picking, and re-integrate back into society through art, music, and mentorship.

The brainchild of Sarah Adeel, a Fulbright alumna and graduate of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the idea for LettuceBee Kids came about when she was in Pakistan in 2008 conducting research for her master's thesis on child welfare in South Asia.

"I was doing a comparative analysis between orphanages and foster-care homes, and these were some of the most abysmal places you could imagine," Adeel explains. "I spent hours getting to know the children. One day, I asked them to write letters to whomever they missed the most, and most of the letters were addressed to God. When I saw them having nobody but God to write to, I knew I wanted to help these kids who, by the luck of the draw, were born on the roadsides."

After graduating from RISD in 2009, Adeel returned to her native Pakistan to launch the LettuceBee Kids non-profit organization with fellow alums Jabbar Bangash, a Global UGRAD alum who earned his degree from Carleton University, Mohsin Ali Afzal, a Fulbright alum and graduate of UC Berkeley, and Zainab Feroz Kapadia, a Fulbright alum and graduate of Columbia University. The United States invests more in the Fulbright Program in Pakistan than in any other country in the world and supports numerous other exchange programs that together have resulted in a Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network of more than 12,000 registered members.

June Art Events at Constellation Gallery

The monthly Life Drawing Workshop at Constellation Gallery, 511 Congress St., Portland, is Friday, June 15th from 7 to 9 PM, $10 at the door.  Artists working in any media and at all skill levels are invited to this drop-in session with a live model.  There are a limited number of easels available provided on a first come, first served basis, but artists are asked to bring their own supplies.  Please call 207-409-6617 for more information.

Interactive Assemblage Art Demonstration & Art Give-Away, Friday, June 22 from 7 to 9 pm at Constellation Gallery, 511 Congress St., Portland.  New Constellation artistAnastasia Weigle will create a piece of assemblage art, a process of making three-dimensional or two-dimensional artistic compositions by putting together found objects.  Participants are encouraged to bring in a found object (no larger than 5 inches).  Weigle will use the objects brought in to create an art piece as she details her working process.  Participants who donated objects will be entered into a drawing to win the work of art that Weigle creates that evening.  Donations are requested at the door.  Please call 207-409-6617 for more information.
                                                          

Portland Performing Arts Festival Fringe at Constellation Gallery, 511 Congress St., Portland, is Friday, June 29th from 6 to 8 pm features dance and music in the gallery space,#5 suggested donation at the door .  At 6 pm, Nabintu will perform a style of belly dance she created called Rwandan Fusion.  It is inspired by the unifying and symbolic traditional Rwandan dance she learned while living in Central Africa, fused with traditional and improvisational belly dance.  

At 6:30, composer and improvisational pianist Gregory Hall will perform.  Hall is well known as both a composer (having written pieces for over 40 ensembles) and performer.  He is president of the Maine Composers Forum and the American Composers Alliance (ACA).  He describes his improvisational style as performances in the virtuoso spirit of the great composer/pianists of the early twentieth century such as Scriabin and Messiaen.

Augusta, Maine - The public is invited to visit the lobby gallery at 45 Memorial Circle in Augusta to enjoy artwork by Cony High School Independent Study Art Students Colton Brann, Kelly Clark, Charlie Eames, Marissa Eldridge, Erin Ludwig, Chantel Wellman, Talisan Greaton, Jon Caron and Sabrina Poulin from now through July 7, 2012.   The exhibition, in the former ATM lobby of the 45 Memorial Circle (also known as the "Preti-Flaherty building), is viewable from outside the building from 9am to 9pm daily. Sponsored by the Kennebec Valley Art Association.

The artist are all seniors who have been working independently since January under the guidance of Jason Morgan and Kelly Halle of Cony High School Art Department, focusing on personal goals in art of various media.

Colton Brann has been working 2D and 3D, ranging from highly detailed color pencil drawings to equally detailed ceramic pieces such as his Radiohead, 2012. He has taken all the fine art classes offered at Cony and plans to continue his eduction to become an art educator.

Kelly Clark hasn’t taken an art classes since her Art One class her freshman year. During this semester she has bloomed as an artist with her pen and ink drawings and her paintings called the Mitosis Series.

Erin Ludwig has a similar story with little art experience. During her independent study, she has explored various subjects in painting and created expressive sculptures of trees with wire and clay.

Chantel Wellman has been involved with the art department the last four years. She has experience in all media offered at Cony, choosing to focus on painting abstracted images inspired from nature and the human form.

Charlie Eames has focused in clay for his past art experience at Kents Hill. Now back at Cony, he has found his passion in drawing and painting with his abstracted figurative work.

Sabrina Poulin has focused on clay with Ms. Halle this year and is working with sculptural forms fused with color. She too hasn’t had much art experience until this year.

Marissa Eldridge has worked in multiple media and has done the same for her independent study work. She has worked in clay to complete her butterfly piece, painted expressive portraits, and is currently working out a figurative piece.

Jon Caron has found his passion in clay and choose to also work as an independent study student with Ms. Halle. He has always been involved in the arts at Cony and has participated in Cony’s Art Club.
