Mariners Pick up First NCAA Postseason Set Win in 3-1 Defeat

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Johnson & Wales University, 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-9) on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Mariners are the first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) team to claim a set victory since the conference earned an automatic qualifier in 2004.

With the loss, the Mariners conclude the most
victorious season in program history at 24-4 overall, after winning their fourth-consecutive NAC championship last weekend.

Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Mariners with nine kills and contributed 11 digs, an assist and an ace, Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a double-double with 29 assists, 13 digs and added four kills. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the Mariners with 20 digs and also added three assists and an ace, while Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) added 14 digs, three kills, an assist, an ace and two blocks and Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) tallied 10 digs and eight kills.

Johnson & Wales' Maria Coniglio led the match with 19 kills and 15 digs for a double-double, while also adding four assists, two aces and a block, Elyssa Nicolas tallied a match-high 22 digs to go with three assists and Brylee Frank recorded 33 assists and 14 digs for a double-double of her own, while also chipping in with six kills and three aces.

The Wildcats improve to 28-4 and will advance to the second round of the tournament.
