The Dance Hall Celebrates 3 Years!
Gary Sredzienski photo credit: Joanne Francis |
Kittery, Maine - On April 11, 2011 - The Dance Hall in Kittery opened its doors to the public for the first time with an afternoon of free dance classes for the community. Since then, the Hall has been full of not only classes but a diverse array of music, dance and performance events, meetings, a history project, a ukulele festival, and the annual Portsmouth Percussive Dance Festival.
To celebrate its three year anniversary, on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 7:30 pm The Dance Hall is featuring one of its favorite performers, Gary Sredzienski, and his band,The Serfs. "Gary has performed at The Dance Hall twice and both times brought the house down," according to director Drika Overton. "He's such a magnetic performer."
The Serfs are popular Seacoast band that have been delighting audiences for over 20 years with a unique blend of instruments and musical genres. The band formed in 1989 when accordionist Gary Sredzienski was strolling from table to table playing traditional music at a Polish wedding and met the popular Portsmouth, NH, surf/rockabilly band once known as the 'Beach Cowboys.' These two musical acts fused and gave birth to a unique group, combining traditional world music with 50s/60s style instrumental rock. One of the earliest objectives of the band was to elevate the much maligned image of the piano accordion. The Serfs draw from a wide variety of traditional world music styles and its own compositions to cross boundaries and elevate the accordion's image to a diverse multicultural vocalist.
Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at TheDanceHallKittery.org or RiverRun Bookstore, Wallingford Square, Kittery.
