Two experts with Maine’s Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection and Legal Services for the Elderly will give a presentation at the Camden Public Library on Thursday, October 6, at 2:00 pm. They will address various elder financial protection topics and how to recognize and fight scams. Meegan Burbank is a staff attorney at Legal Services for the Elderly and will co-present with David M. Leach, MPA, Principal Consumer Credit Examiner.

They will cover financial protection topics and distribute two guides co-authored by Leach: Downeaster Common Sense Guide: Gone Phishing (State of Maine’s anti-scam guide); and Downeaster Guide to Elder Financial Protection (Contains popular resource hotline numbers – Do Not Call, Do Not Mail, Credit Card Opt-Out—and state, federal and non-profit agency contact information).

David Leach is a native of Hallowell/Farmingdale, and has 28+ years as a Maine State Government employee (Bank and non-bank financial/credit regulation), as well as 14+ years as adjunct professor at the University of Maine at Augusta (Banking, securities, marketing & financial management courses). He is also the author or co-author of 15 State of Maine consumer protection publications on banking, money management, auto buying, responsible credit use, scam fighting, and elder financial protection

Meegan Burbank is an Aroostook County native, who was raised in the midcoast. She graduated from William & Mary School of Law in Virginia, and immediately returned to Maine to open a law practice. After 15 years in private practice, she is now Legal Services for the Elderly’s staff attorney for Knox, Lincoln, and Waldo Counties. She is excited for the opportunity to be presenting with such an enthusiastic advocate (and prolific, informative writer) as David Leach. Her portion of the presentation will highlight the importance of recognizing the signs of elder abuse and exploitation (physical, emotional, and financial abuse) and will outline Legal Services for the Elderly’s excellent resources available for Maine’s seniors, and how to access these resources.
