Artist in Residence Walk along St. George River

The question is not what you look at, but what you see – Henry David Thoreau
Rockland, Maine – Henry David Thoreau could have been writing about the artistic process of photographer Barbara Bosworth. Bosworth, Georges River Land Trust’s 2014 artist in residence will lead a “deep looking” walk along the St. George River on Sunday, June 29 at 9 am. Participants will have the opportunity to hear Bosworth, a nationally exhibited landscape and nature photographer and professor of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, describe how she “looks” at nature on this walk along the bank of the river in Appleton.

Space in the walk is limited to 20 people. Interested parties should call the Land Trust office, 594-5166, to reserve a spot and receive directions. Participants should come dressed for a walk in the woods, and bring cameras and/or binoculars.

Bosworth’s prints, made exclusively with a large-format view camera, capture shafts of light, glowing waterfalls, and the shimmering surface of a gently flowing creek. In her residency, Bosworth will focus her lens on the tributaries of the Georges River, the brooks and streams, and less known natural areas.

In describing how to “look deeply,” Bosworth will talk about the things she notices along the way such as light, time of day, and her wonder at the not-so-obvious treasures to be found. The group will spend time observing and talking about the things they see. Observation is subjective and participants will learn from each other as they pay close attention to the details they notice along the way.

Bosworth will interact with the public in in one additional event during her June-July residency, a guided conversation about contemporary landscape photography on Wednesday, July 23. The conversation will be held at a seaside home in Port Clyde, and interested people should call the Land Trust office at 594-5166 to sign up as space is limited to 15 people.
