Jen Porter, agricultural consultant and “farm-builder,” will give an illustrated talk on farm design on Thursday evening, May 29, at 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. The talk is part of the “Let’s Get Growing” series at the library. Porter will speak about “farm-building,” the act of planning, designing, implementing, and managing an organic farm. Through a vivid and dynamic slideshow, she will tell her story of working with Eliot Coleman as a teenager, working on several farm projects in South America, running her own family farm, developing educational “farm camp” programs, and her more recent projects building the Turner Farm on North Haven and the Point Lookout Farm in Lincolnville.
Jen Porter grew up in Camden, and her passion for food production, soil science (and Spanish) started in high school after a summer of working with Eliot Coleman in Vermont. She spent her 20s collaborating with farm projects in Spain, Cuba, Mexico, and Chile, and earned a master’s degree in International Environmental Policy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. Jen farmed on North Haven Island with her husband and two children for ten years on their family farm, and later designed, developed, and managed the Turner Farm, a diverse, organic, vegetable, meat, and dairy farm that supports Nebo Lodge’s farm-to-table restaurant. Over the last few years she has helped to develop several farms locally, including Salt Water Farm, Golden Brook Farm, and the Point Lookout Farm. Currently, Porter works as an agricultural consultant as a “farm-builder,” developing efficient, prolific (and beautiful) four-season food production systems. Porter lives in Rockport with her husband and two young boys.
