Maine State Ballet Named Best Dance Company in Maine by Down East Readers

FALMOUTH, Maine – Maine State Ballet has been selected by thousands of Down East Magazine’s readers as the Best Dance Group in Maine in the magazine’s 2014 poll.

The “Best of Maine” awards occur annually and provide Down East readers the opportunity to nominate the Maine people, places and things that mean the most to them. Based solely on popular vote, the winners represent the best of Maine as identified by the people who know Maine the best: residents and repeat visitors.

The Maine State Ballet Company, established in 1986 in Falmouth, has fast become the leading professional dance company in the State of Maine. The Company, comprised of over 25 dancers, trains and performs throughout the year. The Ballet's repertoire includes full-length productions and smaller ballets that showcase the company's growing talent. They have staged renowned choreographer George Balanchine's world famous Serenade several times with permission from The Balanchine Trust and continue to premiere original choreographed performances such as last year’s The Little Mermaid.

“We are thrilled the readers of Down East voted us as ‘Best Dance Group’ in Maine,” notes Linda MacArthur Miele, artistic director of Maine State Ballet. “We pride ourselves on having a wide variety of
performances throughout the year appealing to audiences of all ages. From ballets that appeal to all ages such as our upcoming Midsummer Night’s Dream, to children’s favorites like The Nutcracker, our repertoire is as versatile as our dancers are talented.”

Thousands of Down East readers voted from February through April for their statewide selections. The full list of the Best Of honored businesses, places and more, appears in the July issue of Down East.

“This year thousands of readers nominated their favorites across Maine,” said Down East Editor in Chief Kathleen Fleury. “To be included in this list selected by the readers of Down East or the editorial team here means that you truly are part of what makes Maine so great. Our readers and team take the task of selecting the Best Of very seriously. It really is an honor.”

The full list of “Best of Maine” winners appears in the July issue of Down East, on newsstands June 24.
