George S. Chappell is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who has been involved in writing for most of his adult life as an English teacher and a journalist. A recipient of a Master of Fine Arts from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, he also has a Master of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maine in Orono. He is a graduate of Moses Brown School, a Society of Friends school in Providence, R.I. He lives in Rockland, Maine, where he participates in nearby poetry groups, including the Togus Writers. In 2011, he published his first book, A Fresh Footpath: My New Life in Poetry, a collection based on his master’s thesis at Goddard. In 2013, he published When Souls Walk Away, a collection of poems based on his work with veterans at the Veterans Administration hospital at Togus in Augusta. Maine.
Mr. Chappell will once again be teaching his creative writing class for veterans and their families at the Camden Public Library starting September 1. The class will run first and third Fridays from 9:30 to 11:00 am in the History Center of the library. The class in creative writing is free and open to veterans and their family members.
