BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University baseball team (21-17,13-10 NAC) dropped both games of their home doubleheader with Castleton (29-7, 20-3 NAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles lost the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 1-0 and lost the second 1-0.
Game 1: Husson 0, Castleton 1
After 6.2 innings of shutout baseball, Castleton finally broke the scoreless tie. A lead-off walk of Mitchell Caron came back to haunt the Eagles. Josh Rylant lined a double into the left-center field gap scoring Caron from first. The 1-0 lead was enough for the Spartan pitching staff.
Ben Holmes (3-3) started game 1 for the Eagles and went 7.0 innings, while allowing one earned run and striking out six. Holmes did not allow a run until the 7th inning. Logan Rogerson, Sam Huston, and Christian Corneil had the three Husson hits.
Devin Hayes (6-1) got the nod for Castleton in game 1 and went 7.0 shutout innings while striking out 10. Josh Rylant had the game winning RBI single. Jonathan Lindau and Rylant combined for four hits, and Dillon Benham had one hit in the win.
Game 1: Husson 0, Castleton 1
The Spartans posted the first and only run of Game #2 in the top of the 2nd. Matt Jackson walked with two outs. Mitchell Caron followed with a base hit through the left side. Dylan Bailey drove Jackson home from second base with a single to centerfield. Castleton held a 1-0 lead after the 2nd inning.
Ryan Allender (2-2) went 6.0 innings for the Eagles. He allowed only one earned run and struck out four. Nick Guerrette threw a scoreless 7th inning. Conor Maguire and David Hutchins combined for the three Eagle hits in the loss.
Davis Mikell (5-1) toed the rubber in Game #2 for Castleton and went 7.0 shutout innings while striking out 12. Dylan Bailey had the lone RBI of the game. Dillon Benham recorded two hits during the Game #2 win.
By completing the four game sweep, Castleton will host the North Atlantic Conference playoff. Husson will wait and see what seed they receive.
