Thirty-three receive assistance from American Red Cross
PORTLAND, Maine – Last night’s 3rd alarm fire on Munjoy Hill displaced 13 people living at 6 Cumberland Avenue. The Red Cross responded last night and has been assisting those displaced with temporary arrangements. In total, 33 tenants from four apartment buildings received assistance. When fire crews arrived on scene just before 8:00 PM the fire had already spread to three other nearby buildings at 10 Cumberland Ave, and 10 and 14 Merrill Street. The original fire started in the building at 6 Cumberland Ave., a three-story apartment building, which suffered heavy fire damage on all floors.
Working smoke alarms allowed the safe evacuation of the tenants on the second and third floors. Portland firefighters worked extremely hard to ensure the fire did not spread further to the adjacent buildings. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters as a result of the fire.
Portland Fire Investigators determined the origin of the fire to be in the first floor apartment caused by a faulty electric cooking stove in the kitchen. Inspectors are working today to assess the conditions of the adjacent buildings in order to determine what work needs to be done so tenants can move back in.
