Mitch Atkins Fans Season-High 10 in Seven Innings
Portland, Maine - Mauricio Dubon hit a game-tying home run in the fifth and a game-winning RBI double in the seventh and the Sea Dogs (52-76) came from behind to defeat the Trenton Thunder (81-50) 4-3 on Thursday night at Hadlock Field.
Mitch Atkins (W, 5-7) struck out a season-high 10 in seven innings as the Sea Dogs starter. He allowed three runs on seven hits while walking just one. Atkins now leads the Eastern League with 132 strikeouts on the season and is the third Sea Dogs starter to fan 10 in a game this year (Wilkerson 4/7 @ REA, Beeks 6/23 v. HAR).
Portland scored the game's first run in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Nate Freiman, who finished the game 0-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI.
Mark Payton homered off of Atkins with two outs in the second inning to give Trenton a 2-1 lead.
Aneury Tavarez tripled in the third and scored on an RBI groundout by Freiman to tie the game 2-2 in the third. Tavarez's triple was his 12th of the year and the 45th of the season by the Sea Dogs, tying the franchise record set in 1995.
After Trenton took the lead back in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple by Dustin Fowler, Mauricio Dubon homered in the bottom half of the inning over the Maine Monster to tie the game 3-3.
After Dubon gave Portland the lead, Taylor Grover pitched a scoreless eighth and Luis Ysla struck out Tyler Wade with runners at the corners to end the game and earn his third save.
Trenton starter Ronald Herrera allowed three runs on six hits in six innings, walking one and striking out seven.
