ELLSWORTH, Maine - The Grand’s film program concentrating on subjects of interest to the Maine community continues on Saturday, June 28th with a double-feature tribute to local married filmmakers Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, who will be in attendance during both screenings. It begins at 3 pm with the couple's acclaimed documentary “The Way We Get By” and concludes at 7 pm with their new fiction feature “Beneath the Harvest Sky”, with both filmmakers participating in a Q&A after each screening. Tickets are available at The Grand box office (667-9500) or online at www.grandonline.org and are $7 for general admission, $6 for seniors and $5 for Grand Members for each film.
The SXSW Special Jury Award winning ”The Way We Get By” is a deeply moving film about life and how to live it. Beginning as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop greeters – a group of senior citizens who gather daily at Bangor International Airport to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq, the film quickly turns into a moving, unsettling, and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war, and mortality.
“Beneath the Harvest Sky” begins during harvest break, when Casper (Emory Cohen) is drawn into smuggling drugs across the Canadian border with his outlaw father, Clayton (Aidan Gillen). Meanwhile, Dominic (Callan McAuliffe) works his final potato harvest, hoping to earn the money he needs to buy a car and take them away towards a better future. But with Casper’s life unraveling before their eyes, their friendship and loyalty are put to the test as they are forced to mature and make very adult decisions that will forever alter the course of their lives. With Carla Gallo, Carrie Preston and Josh Mostel.
The film program continues at The Grand with their annual French/Italian Film Festival opening with this year's Best Foreign Film Oscar™ award-winning The Great Beauty on Friday, July 11th at 7 pm and Saturday, July 12th at 2 pm, and the Summer Cinegrand Weekly Film Series beginning with an encore screening of this year's Best Picture Oscar™ winner 12 Years a Slave on Tuesday, July 8th at 7:30 pm.
