Camden Public Library Announces Schedule for Popular Movie Series

“Arsenic and Old Lace” will open the Monday Night Movies in the Park series at the Camden Public Library’s Amphitheatre on Monday evening, July 7, at dusk (8:30 pm). The movie series is projected on an inflatable screen in the Amphitheatre so audiences can enjoy outdoor movies and watch the moon rise over the harbor. Bring blankets or chairs for seating; the movies are free, and will be shown indoors if the weather turns wet. The series will continue this summer thanks to the generosity of Camden National Bank and Allen Insurance/Financial.

The Camden Public Library has announced the Monday night movie schedule: July 7, “Arsenic and Old Lace” (1944; 118 minutes) not rated; July 14, “My Man Godfrey” (1936; 94 minutes), B&W; July 21, “Meet the Robinsons” (2007; 95 minutes) G, animated; July 28, “Secondhand Lions” (2003; 109 minutes) PG; August 4, “Glory” (1989; 122 minutes) R; and August 11, “October Sky”  (1999; 108 minutes) PG. The movies begin at “dusk,” check the library website for updates.

“Arsenic and Old Lace” is a madcap comedy from 1944 starring Cary Grant. The movie is a brilliant comedy, still wonderful and still hilarious, about Mortimer and his Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha Brewster, two sweet little old ladies who donate toys to charity and care for their nephew Teddy, a bugle-blowing eccentric who thinks he’s Theodore Roosevelt. But Abby and Martha aren’t as sweet and innocent as they seem. Mortimer soon discovers, to his horror, that his dear old aunties have a dozen bodies buried in the basement. It seems the Brewster sisters have a new hobby – luring lonely old men into their home and serving them elderberry wine spiked with arsenic poison. Two murderers (Peter Lorre and Raymond Massey) move into the aunts’ house with the idea of adding a few corpses of their own. The movie was originally scheduled for last summer but was rained out. This summer no movies will be rained out, the screening will be indoors in the case of wet weather.
