USM MGOLF: Men’s Golf Begins 2021-22 Athletic Year with Head-to-Head Competition

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine golf program kickstarted the 2021-22 athletic year with head-to-head competition against in-state opponent the Saint Joseph’s College of Maine this morning (Sept. 1st) at the Gorham Country Club.

 

The Huskies and Monks met on the par 71 course

and played off the blue tees. In the head-to-head battle, both teams were deadlocked with a 302 (+18) score, however, SJC ended up winning the duel off the fifth score tiebreaker as Cody Rizzo’s 84 (+13) card bested senior Matt Fuller’s (Mirror Lake, N.H.) by three strokes.

 

USM’s Zach Ellsworth (Saranac Lake, NY) and Brogan Kane (Scarborough, ME) were the low golfers putting home 73 (+2) showings to deadlock for third place. Carter Burnell (Biddeford, ME) tied for eighth place with a 78 (+7) as he shot a 38 through the front nine. John Welch (South Portland, ME) was a consistent 39 through the front and back of the course for a 78 (+7) for a share of eighth while Fuller rounded out the team scoring.

 

Individually, Bryce Dufour (Lewiston, ME) fired an 82 (+11) dropping six strokes off his back nine scorecard. Colin Dewitt (Newington, CT) produced an 85 (+14) while Peter Boswell (Gorham, ME) and Shane Kilby (Auburn, ME) shot 95 (+24) and 98 (+27) respectively

 

The Huskies hit the links next Wednesday, September 8th for the John Queenan Memorial Tournament at the Pont Sebago Golf Course in Casco, ME.
