Area Fire Departments Battle Overnight 120 North Main Street Rockland Structure Fire

Rockland, Maine - According to Rockland Fire Department, Rockland Fire was dispatched to a building fire at 120 North Main Street around 12:20 AM this morning. Rockland Car 1 arrived to find heavy fire showing from both the first and second floors with flames impinging on a propane tank located near the structure.

Just after the arrival of the duty shift (a Shift), the power service entrance to the house burned off, causing a live wire to be dangling from the pole. Crews went straight to work and began extinguishing what fire they could get to from the outside of the building while other members began to make entry into the house. A second alarm was requested from the incident commander at 12:30.

The fire had significant headway before the call was even made to 9-1-1 and for that reason there was heavy damage to structural members within the home. Firefighters were ordered to not make entry into certain placed within the home as a precaution.

Firefighters remained on scene until around 5 am this morning. While no injuries were reported for the residents or the first responders, it is believed that a family pet did perish in the fire.

As is true with any fire, a quick response saves lives and property. A staffed fire department is able to respond quicker and mitigate the hazards sooner, preventing further fire spread and damage from occurring. Our mutual aid partners were also quick to respond and we thank them for their help

One major hindrance encountered at this fire was the condition of the home. Personal belongings filled every pathway, hallway, stairway, and blocked multiple means of entry/egress into the structure, including most of the windows. A large amount of time and energy was put into gaining entry to extinguish various rooms that had heavy fire involvement.

We also were dealing with a delayed notification of the fire which puts us at a disadvantage. The fire upon arrival was of significant size and we needed all the manpower we could get.

Cause is under investigation by RFD and State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Estimated 30 firefighters responded to the scene.
