The Golden Age of Camden's Cottages

The Camden-Rockport Historical Society presents architect Chris Glass at the Camden Public Library on Sunday, March 19 at 2:00 pm. This will be a survey of house design through Camden’s history, concentrating on the turn of the twentieth century, when builders competed to supply the new market for Shingle Style summer cottages. The Camden Library has a good collection of period views and descriptions of the houses and biographies of the builders in the Walsh History Center. We will look at what came before, during and after them.

Christopher Glass is an architect practicing in Camden since 1974. His practice has consisted primarily of new houses and renovations to existing ones, along with historic preservation and small commercial and church projects. He is the former architect member and chairman of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and former President of Maine Preservation, and has received awards from both organizations.

He taught architectural design at Bowdoin College for twenty years and has lectured widely. He is the author of At Home in Maine: Houses Designed to Fit the Land, Down East Books 2005, Historic Maine Homes: 300 Years of Great Houses, Down East Books 2009 and Homes Down East: Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses, Tilbury house 2014.
He grew up in Washington, D.C. and has a degree in philosophy from Haverford College, and his Master of Architecture degree from Yale University. His wife Rosalee holds a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Bangor Seminary and is an Episcopal Deacon.
