Owls Head, Maine - The Owls Head Transportation Museum will host the third annual Midcoast Model Fest on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24. The event has realized past success, attracting model builders of all ages and numerous model clubs from around the region.
"We're very excited about the event this year because we are expanding and improving almost every aspect of the show," said event coordinator Ethan Yankura. "From ultra-modern electronics and controls to good old fashion rubber band powered planes, jumbo scale airplanes to miniature furniture, complete with tiny joinery, this show has it all."
Yankura said he expects a mix of both kit models as well as hand-made creations. There will be everything from antique model steam engines, to cars, planes, ships and trains. All sizes will be accommodated.
On the smaller scale, miniaturists will be joining the show this year. Not to be confused with children's dollhouses, miniaturists build architectural quality scale homes and furnishings. Even the tools that build the hobby are miniature and will be displayed and demonstrated.
The family-oriented event will feature demonstrations and activities for young and old. Among the activities for children under 18, the Southern Maine Scale Modelers will host a Make-and-Take model workshop beginning at 10:30am.
Each child will build a glue-less snap kit model. A variety of styles will be available. Instruction and all materials will be provided.
In addition to the South Maine Scale Modelers, the Kennebec Valley Model Aviators, Franklin County Aircraft Modelers and Brunswick Area Modelers will be demonstrating radio-controlled aircraft and free flight in the Museum's Main Display throughout the weekend. The Kennebec Model Aviators will also have a flight simulator for the public to use.
Granite Leisure Time of Oakland will have a RC racecar track set up indoors for demonstrations. They will also have a racecar simulator available for public use.
Members of the Maine Antique Power Association (MAPA) and New England Model Engineering Society will display working steam and gas-powered model engines.
The Down East Shipmodeler's Guild plans an impressive display of scale model schooners and other sail craft.
Being the height of mud season, all activities are planned for indoors. Weather permitting, there will be outdoor demonstrations of remote control cars, trucks and airplanes. Granite Leisure Time will perform some high flying maneuvers with their remote control ground vehicles. Yankura says, "In years past, we have seen some of these cars reach heights of eight feet or more." The aerial performance will continue with demonstrations by large-scale remote control aircraft, with wingspans approaching 9 and 10 feet.
Admission is $12 for adults. Children under 18 get in free. Doors open at 9:30 am. For more information about the event call the Museum at 594-4418 or visit our website at owlshead.org. The Museum is located at 117 Museum Street, in Owls Head, Maine just two miles south of Rockland on Rte. 73.
