Aeros Elevate Late in 5-1 Win Over Portland
Espino dazzles Dogs for second straight time
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Aeros (68-47) took advantage of two unearned runs in the sixth and downed the Portland Sea Dogs (54-63) 5-1, Wednesday night at Canal Park. The loss for the Sea Dogs snaps a five-game winning streak, and puts them at 18-9 since the Eastern League All-Star Break.
Roberto Perez broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the sixth that plated Nick Weglarz for Akron's second run and the home team never looked back. Perez would later tack on the second run of the inning on Christian Vazquez's throwing error on a botched 3-2-3 double play attempt.
The Aeros added two more with two down in the seventh on four straight hits off of Portland's Chris Balcom-Miller. Juan Diaz doubled to begin the rally, while Ryan Rohlinger and Perez picked up RBI singles to up the lead to its final margin of four.
For the third game in a row, the Portland squad jumped out to a first inning lead. With two outs, Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a double down the right field line in front of Bryce Brentz who singled him home and put the 'Dogs up 1-0. That, however, would be all the offense Portland could muster against the Akron arms.
Drake Britton (3-5) started for Portland and pitched into the sixth, but was lifted after five and one-third. The southpaw took the loss and allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits; he walked three and added three strikeouts.
Balcom-Miller finished with two runs allowed on four hits in an inning and one-third. Caleb Clay closed out the game on the mound for Portland with four straight outs, the first three by way of the K.
Paolo Espino (7-2) earned the win for the Aeros with six strong innings in his second straight start against Portland. The righty allowed just one run on three hits in six innings; he didn't walk a batter and struck out four. Shawn Armstrong, Jose Flores, and the 7-foot-1 Loek Van Mil combined to toss three scoreless frames and locked down the win for Akron.
Prime Motor Group Player of the Game: Bryce Brentz 1-for-4, RBI
