Jobs for Maine’s Graduates Continues to be a Valuable Resource for Youth

Augusta, Maine - Governor LePage traveled to Southport Island Wednesday evening to speak at an event hosted by Paul and Giselaine Coulombe in support of the Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG) Programs. The event was a chance for alumni of the nonprofit’s programs to come and speak to their experiences during and after their time with JMG.

“In my first State of the State Address, I said that improving education in Maine starts with one simple step: putting students first. That is what JMG does,” said Governor LePage.   “These types of programs that engage with our youth are exactly what we need if we are going to prepare Maine students to strengthen our workforce and improve the economy.”

JMG is a statewide nonprofit that works with Maine’s public schools to help all students reach their fullest potential. They strive to provide students who face barriers to their education with the skills and resources to overcome those challenges. JMG currently serves more than 4,000 students from grades 6-12, in 64 programs statewide.

To show his support for the nonprofit, Governor LePage increased the state’s appropriation to JMG over the next two years from $1,895,379 to $2,795,379 – a total of $900,000.

JMG has been nationally recognized for its successes: JMG’s national affiliate, Jobs for America’s Graduates, recently gave JMG the “5 of 5” national performance award for their exemplary work throughout Maine. Currently, 90 percent of all students participating in their programs graduate within four years. Within a year after graduation, 80 percent of those students are either working, are in college, or have balanced some combination of the two. Two-thirds of those students have found full-time employment. The Maine Department of Labor also reports that JMG students on average are earning more than their employed peers.

“JMG exemplifies the best in Maine education. You can see this in its high graduation rate, its high placement of well-paying jobs, and that it provides alternative paths to accommodate every student’s learning style,” said Governor LePage.
